Speaking of All Nighters…

Okay, so I haven’t had the craziness of an all-night drive, but I had certainly underestimated how crazy this week was going to be.  Speaking engagements at Young Life, Rainier Christian High School Chapel and the NW Ministry Conference on top of the blitz of getting everything done for the first of two Spring Retreats for Youthmark (April 3-4).  Sleep is a precious commodity, I want some more.

It has been such a wild week that this morning, sitting at a Rendmond Starbucks, I think of my blog for the first time in 3 days.  Hadn’t even thought about it, let alone think about a post.

I should be able to update the rest of my Montana trip in the next day or two… I know, you’ve been on edge every since Tuesday (ha)!

Pray for Halle, she has missed the last few days of school with a fever and was up a few times during the night with a really bad earache.  Pray for good connections at the conference and pray for for my messages to flow together for the training times at the retreat next weekend.

Grace,
Brian

Prayers Appreciated

I have a few teaching times on the horizon, I’d really appreciate you praying for these talks.

Monday (3.23):  Speaking at KR YoungLife.  We are going to once again talk about the cross, but emphasize more the resurrection and opportunity we have to have relationship with Christ.

Wednesday (3.25): Speaking at Rainier Christian High School Chapel.  Really looking forward to taking on the subject, “How can we be witnesses to the lost when we are Christian school students?”

Saturday (3.28): Speaking at the NW Ministry Conference at Overlake.  I’ll be doing a session entitled, “Jesus-Focused Youth Ministry.”  I’ll try to convey the much needed, but often neglected areas of student ministry.

I am speaking several times for the Youthmark Audiences in April in May for the spring retreats and one-day training for each of the groups going on the missions.  These talks are also being formed this week!

Truly I appreciate you lifting up these talks to the Lord.  I am excited to present His Word!

I’ll get you more of the Montana/Idaho report Monday!

My Friend Byron

On Sunday afternoon the Aaby family hosted a prayer gathering for our good friends Byron and Shannon.  A few weeks ago I had posted about Byron and his recent discovery of cancer.  Well, on Monday he began his chemotherapy treatments which will last for the next couple of months.

The report is that the first chemo treatment went well (he goes in every day this week, for up to seven hours in a day).

As you know, many who go through chemo will lose their hair… this WILL NOT be the case with Byron (see below).  We took care of the hair issue already at the end of the prayer time.  It was such a rich time of fellowship and prayer, folk from as far south as Olympia and as far north as Marysville came to the gathering.  Shannon’s brother, Neil, is on spring break from Boston and was able to join in as well!

Pray for Byron, pray the Lord has much ministry in store for this great young couple in the years ahead!

Brian

Young Lives

It was a thrill to be back at Young Life Club for Kentridge tonight.  Last week I was up at Birch Bay speaking at a retreat for a denominational Pastors/Wives retreat. So, I missed club last week.  Rob (the area director) and I have been team teaching a series through the spring.  Rob shares a  couple minutes of his story and I follow with a portion of the Gospel.

Tonight Rob took them to the point where he was truly questioning if he could have a relationship with God.

I shared a quick (and sadly true) story of a young man who found a $10o bill at the bottom of the out-house.  And went fishing for it.  Though this young man had everything he could ever want on this youth trip, he wanted more and was willing to dig through and into the ick to get that $100.

That $100 may not be what you and I are reaching for, but we are reaching.  We reach for acceptance, popularity, that next high.  We all reach for the fruit, don’t we?  Romans 3:10 says, “there is no one righteous, not even one.”

So, tonight, pray for these young lives that heard the message of sin.  The fact that we have all reached for what we thought was better.  We invite these students to come back to hear the rest of the message.  We let them know there is hope.  There is a better life that we can all have in Christ.

I’m thankful for these 60-70 who have faithfully come and listened.  Pray the Holy Spirit is working in and through each one!

Grace,
Brian

Percentage Charts

Aaaahhhhh!  Nothing like a solid night of sleep to help you feel better.  Though it was only seven hours, it was seven uninterrupted hours.  As I previously posted, I’ve been fighting something.  On Sunday morning, when I woke up with a 102º+ fever I thought I was going to need to make the phone call to cancel my upcoming speaking engagement.

A couple months ago I was invited to be the keynote speaker for the Baptist Network Northwest Youth Pastor/Wife retreat.  This was a unique opportunity because they were essentially asking me to come and share about Youthmark Mission Ventures and my heart to see our students reach their peers in his/her own Jerusalem.  I was very much looking forward to this!  We made arrangements to have Elisabeth’s Mom come to town to take care of the girls so Elisabeth and Will would be able to be a part of the retreat as well.

So on Sunday after a trip to the doc and spending much of the day in bed, I decided to give it until Monday to see how I was doing before I would cancel.  On Sunday I was probably feeling about 30%.  By Monday, I was up to a 45%, so it was worth the risk of heading north to Birch Bay for the retreat.  The fever was still there, but has subsided to 100.5º to 101.5º throughout the day.

The retreat was really worth it.  It was so laid back and afforded me the opportunity to really rest while still being able to fully participate. Ten couples from the NW (WA/OR) joined together at a Time-Share resort community.  We did communal meals which led to sharing times. We enjoyed hearing the testimonies from each of the couples.

On Tuesday (feeling about 60% and fever just about 100º), I was able to share about the YMV strategy.  I believe many of these churches will join us in the years to come.

By Wednesday I was feeling about 70% (and I believe my fever broke completely that morning).

Today, as I sit in the Community Cup (new coffee shop off Military Road in SeaTac), I would say I am up to 90%, really just the nasty cough that lingers. I’m 100%  thankful for the opportunity I had with the BNN and am thankful for those of you who were praying me through these last few days!

Sick on Sunday

Would very much appreciate your prayers today.  Throughout the day yesterday I could feel some sickness coming on.  By the time we left Nathan and Megan’s wedding I could tell a fever was ensuing.  Went to bed at about 8:30 last night and woke up with a 102.2 fever this morning.

The doc said it is just a viral thing, ruled out Strep Throat and the Flu.

Anyway, I have a couple speaking opportunities this week and would greatly appreciate your prayers for a quick healing.

Thanks!

Youth Ministry Causes Pancreas To Explode

My friend, Joe, is a Youth Pastor in the greater Seattle area.  Though this headline is not entirely true, it is a serious prayer request on his behalf.  Joe has been in Youth and Music ministry for years (check out some of his music here); in those years of ministry he has had some seasons that honestly remind me a little of Job.  He has had some real “give and take away” moments.

The last couple years he has had to deal with his own health issues, most recently dealing with some serious pancreatic problems.  This Friday, Joe, and his wife, Lisa, are going to meet with the doc.  This will be a key time with the doctor in making decisions as to how to move forward with these issues.

Pray for wisdom.

Pray for healing.

Pray for their family and the youth in the ministry at Calvary Chapel South.

I texted Joe today to get permission to blog about this, he is the one who came up with my blog title, so at least in his Job-like state the Lord has not taken away his humor (or perhaps some of you think He has!).

Thanks for praying for Joe!  I posted one of his songs below.

Young Life Speaking

I have written about our church search in the past, but I am uncertain I have posted about my ministry search?  When I left the role of Youth Pastor and ventured into Youthmark full time I knew I’d eventually be back at a church and be involved volunteering in ministry. In fact, I really looked forward to that.  Somehow it NEVER occurred to me that my ministry may be outside the church.

logoIn the middle of the Kent/Renton Youth Leader network (I believe in November), God, smacked me (not literally) over the head and said, “why aren’t you asking me about Young Life?”  So, I asked.  And He answered with a “Yes.”  I have been involved with Kentridge Young Life now for a couple months, but really, this last Monday was when I really felt at home as a full-fledged leader.  It was the first club back after the Holidays and it was my first club for me to speak at as well.  Rob (the area director) and I are doing a tag-team Testimony/Talk series.  Rob starts with part of his testimony and it leads to me doing a 7-10 minute talk on the person/attributes of God.  Pray the Lord uses this series to reveal Himself to many teens.

It is a privilege to have one of my former small group guys, Ricky, leading club at KR with me!  I love seeing him in ministry action!  The Discipleship continues in many ways!

NTOY Surprise

Each week I am a part of a local Youth Pastor network.  The guys I have been teaming with for the last five years reside (or at least serve) in the greater Burien area.  This last week ( a week ago tomorrow), I had two minor “brushes with fame.”  Both of these guys would be upset for saying they were famous, but I will, because they sort of are.

images2The second came as I was about to leave.  I walked over to the corner booth of the coffee shop and introduced myself to Mark Driscoll (“One of the Pastors at Mars Hill Church of Ballard”).  Nice guy.  We joked about a few things and he came over and introduced himself to  the rest of the network.

The first “brush” came about an hour earlier when all the network was teasing Schlaud about his wedding and all the details. I received a call from an out of state area code.  The man on the other end of the call said something to the effect of, “tell them such-n-such story!”  I was obviouslyimages-12confused.  First, how did this guy know I was talking about weddings?  I thought maybe my pocket had accidentally sent a call and now my “friend” was calling back and letting me know he could hear everything.  After a few more awkward exchanges (with me racking my brain trying to figure out who I was speaking to) he said, “look around the cafe!”

Mike Geisen, one of my two best friends growing up was across the room.  Mike is the National Teacher of the Year (he was up in Seattle for a speaking engagement).  This year has been crazy for him, you can read about his endeavors here.

We chatted for about 15 minutes and then I made my way back to the other guys.  But before we were done speaking we set up a late night appointment.  A surprise for our other best bud, Jeff.  More tomorrow…

Three Down, One to Go

The Rose Hill gang has been a fun youth group to hang out with this weekend at Lake Retreat.  Thus far I have had three talks with the fourth and final being delivered on Sunday morning.  It has been especially nice for me (and  a real blessing, thanks Doug) because I have been able to come home at night.  Living less than 30 minutes from the camp afforded me the fantastic opportunity to be in my own bed after formal programming at the camp.

Halle and Audrey? Nah.

Halle and Audrey? Nah.

On top of the “at home” benefit, the rest of my little Aaby family trekked out to LR for lunch and some afternoon “free time.”  With a fairly busy spring of travel (scouting for missions) I was very thankful for this little extra time with the family.  After lunch, while Elisabeth fed Will, I took the girls on a little tour of the camp and to the Paint Ball field (where the group was having a great time).  Halle is a quick learner, so it didn’t surprise me to see her nailing down the freshman with ease, but what really surprised me was how well Audrey picked up the art of shooting the semi-automatic glock.

Okay, the last part was NOT AT ALL TRUE, but I did take them on the tour and they did at least see the paintball course!  Did I have you a little worried about what I am teaching my kids?  Ha.

Speaking of teaching…

The three talks have been received well.

Talk one:  CROWD OR CHRIST: We part of the crowd, or followers of Christ?

Talk two: HEAVEN OR KIRKLAND? To live is Christ and die is gain!

Talk three: LOST-N-FOUND (OUT): Your sins will find you out, confess first!

Look forward to finishing strong tomorrow.  Pray the students take God’s Truth home and live it out (and while you’re at it, pray I do the same).

Grace,
Brian
