100five50 Update #3

Wow, I am very surprised that I have decent news in light of this last week.

I was a busy boy with lots of travel, I’ll blog about that soon… long story short, from last Monday on I was in SoCal, NorCal, Colorado and back home for some feasting on Sunday for Father’s Day.  Way less exercise and way more eating.  Here are the results:

I only got to “work out” three times this week.  Two long walks and one bike-ride.  This is the downside of staying out of state and at places with no work-out center (stayed economically with friends rather than in hotels).

I ate pretty poorly, though I would say my Carb-intake was about 75% instead of 50%.

Overall weight… stayed the same.  216 I remain.

Great news considering the week that was!  Now, time to get on my bike, probably within the next 10 minutes!

Brian

100five50 Update #2

Another week and another update.  We are now approximately two weeks into the challenge I’ve entitled the “100five50 Challenge.”

100 Days

Five Days of exercise per week (sustained 30 minutes of aerobic)

50% of the carbs I would normally eat.

So this last week I did really, really well on the exercise.  I rode all seven days for a total of 47.5 miles.

On the eating side, because of the increase of work out, I certainly saw my appetite increase as well.  Therefore I only lost one pound, but that isn’t disappointing at all.  I am sure my legs built some muscle weight as well.  It felt good to get that much time on the bike.

So, 216 it is on this Monday.

Would love email, text or comments from those that are plugging away, no need to give stats if you don’t want, just let me know if you’re still doing the challenge.

Grace,
Brian

100five50 Update #1

We are one week in to the 100five50 Challenge and when I say “we,” I do mean that!  I believe through comments, emails, texts, IM’s and personal conversations there is somewhere between 12 and 15 folk taking the challenge.

Here are my stats for the week (and believe me, I don’t have the expectation for others to comment on this post, unless they are feeling like they should for the sake of accountability and/or encouragement):

I got my five workouts in, each of them a bike ride and rode 37 miles for the week over five rides.

I’d give myself a B- on the eating, I did cut the carbs roughly in half, but I felt like I compromised on snacking a bit.

I am down 3 lbs to 217.

Overall, a good first week!

Brian

Blessed Saturday

What a wonderful Saturday!

Started with a great breakfast at our favorite breakfast place, “67” at the Edgewater Hotel.  Elisabeth’s folks are in town and we thoroughly enjoy doing the Edgewater with them.  Over the years of going to 67 we have gotten to know one of the servers fairly well, her name is Marlane, she is from Haiti.  We were able to ask her today about the Earthquake.  Please pray for her, she lost a niece and a nephew (one a child of her brother, the other a child of her sister).  Very tough.  We had wondered about Marlane, after the quake, but this was our first opportunity to see her.

After breakfast we went over to the house of some friends of ours.  They live right on a lake.  We spent most of the afternoon relaxing lakeside and under the deck enjoying some great time talking, munching on some snacks and watching the kids throw rocks in the lake.

Late this afternoon I was able to take a 13 mile bike ride.  The ride was fantastic, it was full of time praising God and asking for His provision as I/we move forward.  I found that most of my thoughts were about this last year and seeing all the hard things about the Youthmark year as real learning experiences.  It really created some cool (and new/creative) thoughts about this next year.  I am prayerful and hopeful for what He has in store.

Amazing what one day of great weather can do for the soul!

Hope your Saturday was as a blessing as well!

The 100five50 Challenge! You in?

Throwing down a challenge for anyone interested in getting into a different shape than round–or for those who just want to tone up a little bit too.

Last year I decided it was time to get a little more serious about my health, however, since about my college days I hadn’t been all that great about the ol’ eating habits or exercise disciplines.  There were seasons when I was great about one, but not the other.  I had tried Weight Watchers, and for those who don’t mind counting calories (points) it is a great one to do.  I found great success in losing pounds that way, but whenever I tried to add exercise to that discipline, I got too hungry for the points I was given. Then, whenever I have done really well on the biking or basketball (my two favorite ways of exercising) I found that I lacked discipline on the eating side of things.

Knowing that I have a little bit of the “buck the system” in me, I thought I’d create something that didn’t really have a lot of hard and fast rules.  Just some general standards with some nice flexibility.  So, I created my own “loose” plan last year.  And it is what I am going to do starting tomorrow again.

Here is what I did last year: Between Memorial Day and Labor Day (approximately 100 days) I was going to try to exercise at least five (5) times a week (for about 30 minutes).  I started by walking (not even 30 minutes to start), then graduated to faster walking (and gradually got to 3o minutes) then began riding my bike (at first fairly slow and short, then got longer and more aggressive). Besides this, on the food side of things I simply cut my carbs in half right from the start.  Whatever I would normally eat on the carb-side of things I just generally cut in half.

I loved this because I love carbs and I still get ’em!  For instance, instead of having a full bagel for breakfast, I would still have a bagel, but just half (thus the “50” in the number equation), and then I’d add a banana or something to help make me feel a little more full.  Same thing with lunch, instead of a Ham and Cheese Sandwich, I would do an open faced ham and cheese.  If eating out, I’d still get a burger, I would just take off the top bun and eat it with a fork.

It is an easy “diet” to follow.  You still get to eat what you want, you’ll just want to get more “full” on the protein side of things.  The key is to grab less.  I still even snacked on chips, but I just did approximately half of what I normally would do.  The first few days are really the only hard days, because your stomach needs to shrink a little and so you’ll want to load up a little more on the veggies to still feel more full.

So, here is the simple equation (100five50):

  • 100 days (start whenever, but I’m doing the day after Memorial Day to the Sunday before Labor Day)
  • Five Exercise days a week… not stringent, some weeks I can do every day, some weeks it is only three days.
  • 50, as in 50% of the carbs you normally would eat.

Before 100five50

Last year I started at about 245 pounds.  I got down to a consistent 210 and stayed around there until just recently.  I have crept up only over the last five or six weeks knowing that my schedule was going to be very hectic and knowing that I was going to do this 100five50 thing again.  So this year I start at about 220 and the goal this year is to get to and stay at about 200, but even this is just a loose goal, I just want to be in a good condition, regardless of the overall weight.

After 100five50

Anyone else in?

I’d love the accountability, no need to disclose weight or anything else, just let me know you’re in so we can pray for each other!  Let the challenge begin!  That is, right after I enjoy one last high-carb meal tonight!

Brian

500th Post!

As I begin this, my 500th blog post at brianaaby.com, I wondered about “the early days of my blogging,” so I decided to go back and re-read my first posts here (three posted in late June), I wondered what I had done for my 1-year anniversary on that date, so I looked back at the archives and I posted twice, here and here.

June 28… a significant day, not only the day that I started my blog, but also the day that I started my spiritual journey with Jesus (way back in 1990)! Now, not even two years into my blog, I am up to 500 posts!  It’s been a fun journey and sorry to announce that this will be my last post as well.

April Fools’!  Since I didn’t get you on April 1, I thought I’d try the 18th.

In all seriousness, it has been a fun discipline to maintain this blog. I hope you will continue to be a faithful, semi-faithful or occasional drop-by reader.

In case you were wondering, here are the stats up to 500 posts:

The total views, as of 4.17.10 was 40,518 (I guess my mom has come by nearly 40,000 times, thanks Mom!)

I have received 752 comments… that means I average over 1 comment per post… man, it doesn’t seem like that, I’d like to hear back from you more!

The busiest day was Tuesday, January 5, 2010.  For whatever reason, 288 people wanted to see this. Which, in case you were wondering, hasn’t been totally fulfilled (there’s still time)!

500 down, at least another 500 to go, right?  We’ll see.

Grace,
Brian

Keep Them Coming!

You ever do anything stupid-silly?  I do.

One time I was driving down to California with my wife and one of our students (have I ever told you the Golden Boy story?, If no, leave a request, I can blog that one for sure)… Anyway, Elisabeth, Kevin and I are driving down to California, Kevin is eating some Ritz-bitz crackers stuffed with peanut butter (or was it cheese?).  He stuffed several into his mouth and said, “keep them coming.”  As his face became more and more chipmunk our laughter grew.  One by one we passed him cracker sandwiches, one by one he found more room. We literally ran out of Ritz before he ran out of mouth.  Classic funny (except the laughter did eventually cause him to spew dry cracker all over the inside of our car…)!

We ran out of crackers before he ran out of mouth…

What if we approached our prayer life the same way? What if we really understood that we could never out-ask God? He will field our praise, requests and worship more than we could ever give.

I say this in response to your prayers on behalf of Youthmark. The last two days (since my Top 5 Tuesday post on prayer) have been wonderful for the ministry and it is SO obvious that people have been praying.  God opened up doors in Alaska (and CO, AZ and MT).  But please DO NOT stop.  He (The Lord) still has room for your prayers/praise!

Please pray for more contacts and more doors to open and for solid connections for our sending/receiving places!

Keep praying!  Thanks!

Grace,
Brian
