SoCal SoGood!

I was down in Southern California Tuesday morning thru Thursday evening doing two preview meals for Youthmark Mission Ventures.  As the title states, SoCal was really great!  I was pleased to have 30ish at the San Marcos Old Spaghetti Factory on Wednesday for lunch.  These Youth Leaders came to hear about YMV’s.  On Thursday I welcomed 10 folk to the table at Marie Calendars in Valencia (North LA, near Magic Mountain).

Both meals were interactive and encouraging.  It’s fun to see Youth Leaders interact and glean from one another!

I’m sure I’ll post more about the meals, but please do pray that connections were made in such a way that these Youth Leaders will be serious in praying about the opportunity we set before them!  Praying for the right connections for the 2010 YMV’s and beyond!

My good friend Aaron, who posted a great YouTube video the other day (scroll down a couple posts to see him), is the subject of the new “What Am I Thinking?”

The In The Running section will be below the picture.  Be patient if your comment doesn’t post right away, because of the domain change I need to approve most of the comments first.

Top Five Tuesday: Negatives of Weight Loss

images-3Let me start by saying the positives FAR outweigh (no pun intended) the negatives of my recent quest to get-in-shape. That is to say, get into a shape other than round.  However, the subject for today’s Top list is the top 5 negatives about the weight loss.  There are a few obvious ones, however, there are a few that could surprise.

About this time last year I had really decided that it was time to take some control over my eating habits and exercise.  It was just a decision, not one that I actually followed up on, but at least the decision was made.  I really didn’t want a doc to tell me at age 45, “you need to lose 50 pounds.”  Being in my mid 30’s I figured it was a lot easier to lose it now, than later. Long story short, and because of travel through the spring, I determined that Memorial Day to Labor Day would be my primary time to make it happen.

So far I am down about 30 pounds.  I am quite comfortable with my weight now, and will feel fine if I stay within 5 pounds either way of where I am as of today.

Again, most everything about the weight-loss is positive, so I’m not complaining, simply pointing out a few things I’ve noticed!

Without further ado, the list:

Honorable Mentions (the obvious): Not Eating the Stuff I Want. This actually hasn’t been too bad, but every now and again I really, really, really want to just dive in on something bad.  The good news now, I can!  As long as I don’t do it often and keep up the exercise I am golden, but it’s the digging in to often that I am concerned about!

imagesFive: Biking Budget. I have put a lot of miles on my bike the last few months, so much so that the back tire is about to tear into shreds.  The whole bike is in need of a good tune-up and the fact that the weather has changed means that the clothing is changing.  I now need bike-gear for the winter.  This weight-loss can get expensive.

Four: The Compliments/Comments? For the most part I like them.  It’s very thoughtful and nice to hear that people think you look good having lost the weight.  But then it makes you self-conscious… was I that big/ugly/nasty before?  I know people mean the best… I think?  Ha.

images-2Three: Clothing budget. First, I don’t buy a lot of new clothes to begin with, but now, I am forced to.  I think the most annoying part is the actual shopping for clothes.  I’m not one for trying things on, looking for the right sale, price comparisons, etc.  The very thought of spending a few hours, let alone many dollars on new clothes almost propels this one up the list.  Or, I can just look like I really love hip-hop and layer up boxers, hoop shorts and one more pair of boxers and let the jeans just hang half way down my back side.  Nah, I’ll go to the mall if I have to.

Two: My License. Seeing as how I JUST got my new license last December I am now stuck with that picture for years to come. I can’t wait until 2013… hmmm, perhaps I’ll unINTENTIONALLY lose it.  That picture must go bye-bye!

images-1One: Resizing of Ring. My wedding ring is consistently sliding up my finger and I’ve nearly lost it a number of times.  I need to get this baby re-sized, stat!  The biggest negative, what if I gain weight?  Will I lose a finger because of circulation issues of I resize too small?  Oh, I got it, just don’t put the weight back on!  Good call.

So, there ya go.  Not too controversial I’d think?

I’d appreciate your prayers for me to continue the good disciplines!

Grace,
Brian

The Needed Sunday

I’m coming off of a terrific weekend, and in particular a Sunday that was very needed.

My brother-in-law flew up from Southern California to spend the weekend with us.  He and I have been in the same Fantasy Basketball league for the last several years; this year we decided to do a live draft and get everyone together.  Scott made the trip up to spend time with the family here and get to meet (in person) all the others in the league.

We had a great time together the whole time, but Sunday was the best and very needed for me.

It’s been a busy/hectic/stressful last couple weeks for me.  It seems like a lot of Youthmark stuff was all coming together and once and if I wanted to every waking minute could be spent doing Youthmark related projects. So, Scott’s visit couldn’t have come at a worse, or better time!  It forced me to take a break, relax and just be!  Sunday specifically was that forced break.

We started the day by picking up my Dad (Mom was out of town) and had my family and Scott go up to 67, for Breakfast.  Great grub and awesome atmosphere.  Got back in time for second service at church.  Came home for lunch and some relax time before heading over to another church to play basketball with all the guys from our fantasy league.   Because I’ve gotten in good physical shape (a shape other than “round”), I was able to play well (at least I had my stamina).

After hoops Scott and I came back to finish the prep work for dinner with all the guys back at my house.  Grilled up some steak and chicken and really enjoyed the fellowship with all the FBL guys!  After dinner we had the Fantasy League Draft and a lot of laughter!

I didn’t do a thing for Youthmark (okay, snuck in a couple quick emails that needed to be tended to, but never really had to think too much).  It was a wonderful break!

Oh wait, almost forgot, as I was getting ready for bed I saw on someone’s Tweet that U2 had a live feed of their LA concert on Youtube!  Elisabeth and I watched most of it online, we lost sleep, but oh boy, it was worth it!

Refreshing to get back at it today.  Please pray for a the upcoming lunches and that those who come to preview Youthmark Mission Ventures would see a great potential partner in Youthmark!

Grace,
Brian

Very Nice Plug

A good friend of mine did something very cool this week (without any prompt from me, I promise)!  He shot a video of himself plugging YMV’s and posted it to Youtube!

I’ll be able to use this at the lunches I am hosting to promote Youthmark Mission Ventures!

Thanks Aaron!  If you have about two minutes, check out the video!

Spring is Coming

Okay, so the Seattle weather doesn’t quite reflect the title of this post, however, I am thinking Spring right now.  Yesterday I had the opportunity to drive up north (Burlington/Mt. Vernon) to meet with a couple different friends.  First I met with Mark Moder, the CEO of Youth Dynamics.  We grabbed some coffee and caught up on life.  You can pray for Mark, he has served as the President of Youth Dynamics for almost a year, yet, has been doing so by commuting from Idaho.  He and his family have yet to sell their home in Post Falls, ID.  He spends a couple weeks in WA and a couple weeks in ID each month.

Yep, this is Joe.

Yep, this is Joe.

After my meeting with Mark, and the reason for  “Thinking Spring,” I met with Joe Poppino.  Joe was my worship leader for our two Spring Retreats last spring (and did a fantastic job).  Well, a few weeks ago I officially made the ask for him to consider doing it again.  I let him know we have three retreats in WA this spring and he jumped on board.  I then let him know that we are doing one in Portland, and he jumped at that one too… then I asked the impossible. I asked Joe if he’d be interested in coming to TX, CA and CO for the three out-of-the-northwest retreats.  And after prayer, consultation and more prayer, The Joe Poppino Band is officially the band for Youthmark Mission Ventures Spring Tour!

Joe Poppino is back!

Joe Poppino is back!

I’m excited to have Joe and his band on board. With Joe coming to all seven training times I will be able to utilize his giftedness beyond the music.  Even yesterday we were dreaming of what could be in the Spring of 2010!  Pretty exciting stuff!

Grace,

Brian

Be Hot Or Cold!

For those of you stopping by for something deep and spiritual, I am sorry, the title may be deceiving.

Just a picture today.

Last week I got to experience my first snow of the fall/winter.  I went from the picture below (29 and snowing) to sunny and 70 within about 90 minutes.  Gotta love Colorado.

Top Five Tuesday: Holiday Season Favorites

We’re just about a month away from the “Holiday Season.”  Of course the retail industry would have us believe we are already in the midst of the holiday season (Labor Day to Valentines Day is what I think “they” believe is the Holiday Season).  My criteria is Thanksgiving through New Years Day.

For today’s top five, I thought I’d take a look at my top five traditions/happenings that take place during the season.  These are things that perhaps reflect upon my upbringing and /or are things we do as an immediate family.

So, without further ado… the list:

imagesFive: The new spiritual experiences with my kids.  Each year this one will probably move up the charts.  We do Advent together as a family.  Complete with our own lighting of the candles, Bible reading and discussion time.  Each year the conversations grow deeper and sometimes sillier (I can’t wait for some of the basic questions Will will provide next year).  Doing church on Christmas eve provides sweet memories and reading the Christmas Story of Luke 2 will continue to guide our focus!

images-1Four: Increased board game times! I love board/dice/card games.  For whatever reason they just don’t happen a lot outside of the holidays.  My memory is filled with RISK, Monopoly and Clue (Master Detective, of course) games played during the holidays.  Each year I get together with 25-40 other guys for a couple big hearts tournaments during the holidays as well.  Can’t wait to play some more games this year!

Three: Reunions.  I love the impromptu and planned reunions we get to have around the holidays.  Having had two discipleship groups that I shepherded for a number of years I love the holidays as a time to get together, whether as a group or just with the individuals.  Not only do I have these times with guys I have discipled, but also with old high school or college friends.  The holidays are a breeding ground for some sweet reunions.

Two: Thanksgiving.  Because there is so much wrapped up in the entire day, from Turkey to football, from time with family to time taking naps.  I love it all.  I think Thanksgiving may just be my favorite holiday of them all (hmmm, perhaps another top 5 list later).

images-2One: Christmas Morning Routine for my Immediate Family.  I loved the tradition I had with my family growing up; I believe Elisabeth would say the same for her family as well.  However, we have OUR OWN new tradition in our family.  We start with the stockings, the kids really look forward to the stockings, however, I think Mommy and Daddy enjoy the fun gifts we give in the stockings just as much as they do opening them.  After stockings it’s time to get dressed (somewhat nice) to go up to 67, one of our favorite breakfast places.  That’s right, we go out for Breakfast on Christmas!  After a long and enjoyable breakfast we come home to let the kids open their gifts!  So fun!

GRAND CHAMPION: JESUS. Because Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year are the trio-of-holidays that make up “The Holidays” I can’t help but think of the relationship I have with God the Father and God the Spirit through God the Son!  He is the reason for a New Year (as in, he is the reason we have the calendar we use).  He is the reason for our ultimate Thanksgiving (for eternal life in Him) and He is THE REASON for Christmas.  Thank you Jesus!

I love Jesus and I love the Holidays as a consistent reminder of His grace shown to me!

So, what are some of your favorite Holiday Season Favorites?

Grace,
Brian

Friends In These Places?

If you have friends in the great Dallas, Houston, LA, San Diego, Portland and Seattle areas, this post is very much for you!  Let the post begin…

I love my job.

Years ago I discovered that I have a bit of an entrepreneurial bent.  I like thinking about the risk/reward side of things.

As I walked into Starbucks this afternoon I quickly discovered the re-arrangement of the furniture, and surmised the reasons as to why they made the change.  In talking to the Barista I was confirmed in my thinking.  Much of the decision was based on streamlining the customer experience; from walking into the store, to seeing the merchandise to being ushered out the door (quickly) so that you come back often, but don’t stay too long–it’s all been considered.  Brilliant on their part.  I buck the trend though (I’ll stay for several hours).

I like thinking like a businessman.  But I also love thinking like a Pastor.  A great mix for me at Youthmark.

As Youthmark is expanding beyond the King/Snohomish and Pierce County boundaries, I am trying my hand at marketing.  One discovery I have made is that word-of-mouth advertising is by far the best form of advertising.  For instance, last week in Colorado and the YMV preview lunches; though I sent out mailings, we made phone calls and I personally sent over 150 emails, I had just a handful of people show up who were not connected to either me or one of my close friends in the area.

So, with that knowledge, I am trying a bit of a different tactic for the last six youth leader meals Youthmark is offering to preview the 2010 Youthmark Mission Venture materials and trips.  Soliciting help!  Specifically, soliciting help from you!

I hope you think like I do: Teens in the U.S. can/should be the best missionaries we have!  Let’s train them to reach their own campus, club and community.  If this is something you believe, perhaps you can partner with Youthmark in a new and creative way!

If you have friends in any of the below listed metro areas, I would greatly appreciate your w0rd-of-mouth (and/or email, text or call) advertisement to get friends and acquaintances to the meals.  Specifically we are targeting the Youth Pastors (and/or Pastors if they make the decisions for the Student Ministry).  If you could point people to the registry at  youthmark.com I’d greatly appreciate it.  Of course they can click here to get all the info about YMV’s as well. Here are the dates and times for the meals:

NorthSanDiegoLunchGreater San Diego Area:  San Marcos Old Spaghetti Factory, Wednesday, October 28, Noon.

Greater North Los Angeles Area: Valencia Marie Calendars, Thurday, Oct. 29, 10:00 AM Brunch.

Greater North Houston Area: Spring TX, Stracks Restaurant, Wednesday, Nov. 4, Noon.

YMVPreviewMealGreater North Dallas Area: Buca Di Beppos, Thursday, Nov. 5, Noon.

Seattle: Southcenter (Tukwila) Old Spaghetti Factory, Thursday, Nov. 19, Noon.

Portland: Old Spaghetti Factory (on the River), Old Spaghetti Factory, Thursday, Dec. 4, Noon.

If you are interested in more information or would like to send a specific invite complete with a pdf of the postcard, don’t hesitate to email me and I’ll get you the graphics for this.

So, what do you say?  Can you share the love?  Your prayers and your practical help is so appreciated!  Let me know (comment) if you plan to send off an invite!

Brian

More New Stuff

One new look wasn’t enough, I thought I’d try one other new thing (sort of)…

Last week I began an 8-city mini-tour to promote Youthmark Mission Ventures.  As part of the leader lunch I preview the YMV materials for the 2010 season.  The end-goal is to have Youth Leaders see and understand that what we are offering through Youthmark is much more than a mission trip.

My passion is to see students (and all of us for that matter) reproduce ourself on our own campus, in our own clubs and in our communities.  The idea of going outside of our own home context should be an extension of what we’re already doing in our own home-town. So, the idea of a mission trip comes out of our passion for missionship (to be a missionary at all times).

Last spring, as part of our 2009 training I debuted an idea I had, the FOF Challenge. Because I firmly believe that Christians need to be witnesses wherever/whenever, I challenged the participants to do it online as well. This was HIGHLY successful and I still am receiving emails and Facebook messages talking about the relational conversations students (and leaders) have had as a result of the FOF Challenge.

As part of our Youth Leader Lunch and preview I share about the practical things we do to prepare/train students “for a life of mission,” so, this last week and in six other cities, I will train Youth Leaders in how to use the FOF Challenge in their youth groups (and hopefully their own lives).

If you are on Facebook, I challenge you to take the FOF Challenge as well. If you’re not on Facebook, I bet a lot of your non-believe friends are, so get on and get going!

And here is what’s new:

The FOF Challenge has its own website and blog.  So, rather than me explaining it here, go to the website, check it out, read about it and then do the challenge!  I want to hear your stories, I want to pray for those you’re sharing with.

Check out fofchallenge.com

So, what would it look like for you?… it’s mid-October, what if you took the challenge between now and Thanksgiving?  Or perhaps you want to study up on some Scritptures and you want to do the challenge for all of November?  How about between Thanksgiving and the New Year?  Set a time and take the challenge; maybe, just maybe we’ll see new brothers and sisters come to faith in Christ!

Grace,
Brian
