Ballgame, “Naked” Steve and Ricky

It’s been quite the trip with these guys!  We are having a lot of fun in the dessert.  Don’t let anyone tell you “it’s hot” in AZ.  Because after all, “it’s a dry heat.”  Hmmm… so is an oven.

Each of the guys is currently studying the chapter in Acts they will be presenting tonight.  Each of us was given one of the first 10 chapters to talk about tonight.  I drew chapter one and I’m pretty prepared (though this takes me back to their freshman year, weeks one through about twelve probably.  I look forward to diving back into the Word with them.  These guys have grown a lot and as I have posted, mean a lot to me and I look forward to seeing where God takes them.  Over the next few days I will post about each of them.

Steve Kelly, aka "Naked Steve"

Steve Kelly, aka "Naked Steve"

I remember the weekend I met “Steve.”  He was a friend that Jusin Rose had invited to Boot Camp (our fall camp at Boulevard Park). Steve has asked for a semi-rough ride on a boat-pulled inner tube.  This gutsy sophomore was ready for the ride of his life, and little did he know he was going to give the onlooker a site to behold.  About a minute into the ride Steve was jumping and skimming… so much so that his little waist couldn’t hold on to his swimwear any longer.  On the next turn and slide across the water, a full moon in the middle of the afternoon!  From this point forward, “Naked Steve” was to be his name.  I need to apologize to Tim, Janis and Victoria, they are now known as “Naked’s Family.”

Steve is a great young man.  I have seen him come out of a little shell the last couple years.  We have had the opportunity to have a few deep talks and he has much to offer. The guys all respect Steve.  He was one of a few of the guys who came in from the outside, and you’d never know it seeing how he is accepted by the others. My prayer is that Steve continue to seek God with his heart, that his faith become his own more and more each day.  He plans on attending South Seattle Community College in the fall and is “making progress on getting registered.”

My Bold Prediction for Steve:  Steve will start a clothing company called “Naked Wear.”  It will be a clothing line for no-hipped people.  He’ll make millions and forever be known as “Naked Steve.”

Creepy Ricky

Creepy Ricky

Ricky Judd came to lifeboat on week two or three.  His parents were in the midst of a divorce and Micah and I were amazed how well he hid his emotion.  Over the next four years I can’t think of a Lifeboat who proclaimed his love for baseball, black lake and lifeboat more!  Ricky is a true baseball fan, so we automatically had something in common there.  He loves the stats and all the detail of the game.  I see he is beginning to love the faith in the same way.  This is quite exciting. I have the honor of meeting with Ricky one-on-one now and we are going through the book of Colossians together (that is when he isn’t at Black Lake Bible Camp).  Ricky is going to most likely attend Highline Community College in the fall.  I see Ricky dabbling in a few different things ministry-wise to see where he can best be used.

My Bold Prediction for Ricky: I think Ricky just might love the game of baseball and black lake bible camp enough to become the play-by-play announcer for the Semi-Pro Olympia O’s baseball team (made up of all ex-Black Lake Bible Camp staff members).  This way he can stay near both of his first-loves.  Ricky will for sure end up having the most kids in the lifeboat as well.

Today at the D-backs Game!

Today at the D-backs Game!

Great game today at Chase Field.  Almost saw a perfect game by the Pirates pitcher.  Hoping for the perfect first night of “Lifeboat” on this trip.  Off to grill the steaks!

Great Beginning

Just a quick entry, we’re off to the Diamond Backs baseball game (afternoon game).

Great beginning of our time together last night.  It rained harder than I have ever seen it rain here in AZ as I was picking up the second group last night.  The “baggage” was delayed 45 minutes just because of the lightning strikes around the airport.

The guys were quite surprised by the house.

I’ll get to my posts about the “guys” later today.  And yes, Naked Steve and his story is on tap today!

Looking Forward… Discipleship

A week or two ago I started a new series on this blog (who am I kidding? everything I do right now on this blog is “new”).  I called it, “Looking Forward.”  This series will be a semi-regular post.  Today, I am using my Discipleship Relationships as the subject for this LF (and for fun I added some real and funny links).

In the next…

hour I look forward to finishing the menu/grocery list and some final details for my upcoming trip with my Lifeboat (small group of guys I discipled for the last 4 years at BPPC).

day I am looking forward to shooting the guys an email reminding them of the money they owe me, the last minute details, the money they owe me, the packing list, and the money they owe me (I have paid for everything upfront, so, yeah, reimbursements are needed… ha).

week I look forward to spending several days with these young men that mean a lot to me.  We are heading to Phoenix, AZ for a “last hoorah.”  Micah Egger and I have been co-leading this group for four years and for the last three we have talked, as a group, about doing something special at the end of their senior year.  The guys wanted guaranteed hot weather for a reasonable price.  So we’re renting a house, van and doing most of our meals at the house (to save money on going out).  Here is the itinerary for our trip:

Tuesday: Fly in, shop, pool time, “Lifeboat” time (we’re going to continue our study time, we finished Acts, but we’re going to do some review and concentrate on a few key things to launch into life).

Wednesday: AZ Diamondbacks game by day, pool time and Lifeboat

Thursday: EARLY wake up (5:00 AM), drive to the Grand Canyon (spend several hours there), then come down a back way to Sedona and Slide Rock.  Dinner out.

Friday: Relax day, pool, area mall, movies, some of our guys will have some friends visit (as will I, I used to pastor in Phoenix). Lifeboat at night.

Saturday: Some site-seeing and then the big thing on the agenda is a big “Last Supper” (Lifeboat) as a group.

Sunday: Church, lunch out and flight home.

Please pray the guys going:  Brian, Micah, Steve, Tim, Brandon, Alex, Ricky, Dylan, Frankie and John D. (and while you’re at it, pray for the few guys that couldn’t make it, we are sad: Nick, Josh, Jesse and John F.)

2008 Guys Lifeboat

2008 Guys Lifeboat

month I am looking forward to renewing my one-on-one discipleship with Ricky Judd and seeing our guys get involved in their ministries at their churches and at their schools.  Several of the guys are staying local and will be involved at BPPC and other local churches.  So I will get to stay in close contact with them.

year I am excited to see where God leads us (my family) in terms of a church.  I am most looking forward to getting involved with a small group of young men to disciple again.  My “C-Group” from First EPC and my “Lifeboat” at BPPC have been the highlights of my 16 year career as a Youth Pastor and I can’t wait to do a small group as a volunteer like all my wonderful lay staff members have done with me for years… these are the true heroes in youth ministry!

Father, I am so thankful for the years of youth ministry you have given me and specifically for the two small groups I have been privileged to lead, with the likes of Peter Beringer (FEPC) and Micah Egger (BPPC).  I pray you will continue to use me in shaping the lives of young men!

Trip Report

I am posting from the Promenade Starbucks (very close to LAX) as I prepare to fly home from a wonderful two days of meetings down in SoCal.  Two weeks ago, as I began this venture full time, I knew some of the things I wanted to get started on.  These last two days were affirming and inspiring. I am very excited about the first two projects I will be working on (more so than before).

The first is the mission component.  Over the next three weeks I will have a far more intensive plan and even some of the beginning promotional materials developed.  Please pray specifically for the details to come together (many contacts to make, arrangements to be made and the financial commitments to be worked out).

The second is the completion and expansion of my original Youthmark Product.  It is a series of Guided Studies on the Life of Christ.  The expansion is exciting but will mean that at least half of my time over the next three weeks (have to meet a deadline) will be dedicated to this project.

I really would appreciate your prayers for both of these projects and as the release dates and promotional materials are developed I can speak more specifically about each of these.

Off to In-N-Out for the obligatory and much appreciated Double Double (weight watchers to begin again AFTER the trip!!!!).

Grace,
Brian

Memories

I’m soaring 35,000 feet over the Golden State as I type this entry. I have had many a spiritual memory in SoCal. Not only did I go to college here, but my in-laws live down south.  I thought it’d be fun to list a few of my most Spiritually Memorable locations in life and maybe a quick sentence or two as to why.  I’d love for you to comment and list any of your own!

Malibu Club, Canada (British Columbia, Young Life Camp).  On June 28, 1990, I trusted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior.  God’s glory shown at this beautiful scenic locale.  I have been back 4-5 since and I am flooded with great memories of His majestic views and the new eyes He gave me for His Word.

Santa Clarita/Castaic, CA.  Can’t really say “it’s beautiful,” but will say that this is where God began to build the foundation for the rest of my life.  I met my best friends for life (most importantly my wife), began my first youth ministry and learned much about the “B-I-B-L-E!”

Lake Kachess, WA. As my friend Miki Vercammen was sharing at my going away shin-dig she reminded me of some great times I have had at Lake Kachess.  Many of the most recent memories were of leading the Wave Campout.  Great hikes, boating and plenty of fantastic talks/prayer/worship!

Rural America.  Each town has a different personality.  But each of my Rural Mission trips has had significant impact on my spiritual life. Specifically, Mineral, Morton, Pine Valley, Rockaway Beach, Unity (including the Bus Caravan there), and Julian stand out the most because of the settings and the people (on my team and in the town).

There are more, like Colorado Springs (married there, speaking at camps), Hawaii (speaking), Mexican Prison (a mission, not an inmate), India (mission) and others, but I wanted to keep my list at least somewhat short!

What about you?  What physical locale has been significant to you?

Grace,
Brian

Thankful

I am so thankful to the people of BPPC and the surrounding ministries (merge, Youth Group, etc.) for the wonderful “going away” party/merge service they had for us last night. We are thankful we don’t need to leave these relationships and we know that many of you will be partnering with us through prayer.

I look forward to having a Youthmark Prayer Fellowship on Monday, August 18 at the Heiders.  I will keep you posted at this site (it will be in the evening).  We covet your prayers in the mean-time.

I will be heading down to LA for a quick day and a half of meetings to discuss publishing, marketing and the like.  Please pray for these meetings.  Pray for safety in travel as well.  I’ll post from down there.

For those of you connected to BPPC and the family gathered last night.  Thank you.  We were/are very blessed to have you as friends.

Grace,
Brian

Bye, Bye, Boston

My view looking left

My view looking left

So… My first place for ballparks is now a great debate.  Safeco was number 1 going into the trip, Wrigley was number two… I’ll post an official list in a day or two, but I can tell you after sitting in the seats we had last night, factored with the humidity, heat and everything else, I can’t say “Fenway is the clear cut #1 anymore.”

The seating at Fenway was made for my kids.  Enough said at this point.

Great game last night though!  Boston pulls out a 1-0 Pitching duel.

We are at Logan Airport as I type, getting ready for a flight home.  Can’t wait to see Elisabeth, Halle, Audrey and Will.  Elisabeth is such a great Mommy, but I am sure she is looking forward to a little down time with just Will.  And I can’t wait to have an extended Daddy/Daughters Date (taking them to Lake Kachess later today).

I’m looking forward to start posting some of my other thoughts about this trip, my transition, Youthmark, my family and anything else I can think of.  I’m even thinking of some cool contests I can run on here from time-to-time!

I posted a couple pics of last night below.  Pray for a safe flight for the Aaby-boys!

Bean Town!

We made it to Boston!  As soon as we arrived we were able to take a tour of Fenway Park.  For those of you who don’t know, I took my dad on a baseball trip to Chicago last year.  We were able to see US Cellular Field (WhiteSox), Wrigley Field (Cubs) and Miller Park (Milwaukee Brewers).  I liked all three parks, but Wrigley was the one we both looked forward to the most.  It did NOT disappoint at all.  Heading into this trip, I was certainly excited about all 4 parks and Cooperstown, but was most looking forward to Fenway, here in Boston.

Even after last years trip to the Midwest, Safeco Field in Seattle remained my #1 park I had ever been to.  Well, Fenway has now moved into first place.  The stadium, atmosphere and everything else combined (even w/o taking in a game yet) makes it the best I’ve been to.

Here are a couple pics.

Not my seat tonight!

Not my seat tonight!

After our introduction we were able to head over to the “Green Monster” and sit in the seats there as well.  These seats were added in 2003, and retail at $160 per game (and you have to enter a lottery to even get to one game here).

After touring and on our way out I got a part time job and then David and I were interviewed by the NBC affiliate.  Okay, the first isn’t true, but the second is!  We might be on TV tonight in Boston, if I find it online tonight I’ll let you know!

Anytown, USA

As I sit in our hotel room in Albany, NY, I miss the blast from the past of yesterday.  Yesterday, it seems, we traveled back to 1948, Anytown, USA.  It was actually Cooperstown, NY.  What a great scene.  The place celebrating America’s Pastime looked more like a place I’d take a Rural Mission trip than the place hosting the Hall of Fame of Baseball.

One of the streets in Cooperstown

After an almost 5 hour bus trip we enjoyed scenes like the one above. It was truly gorgeous.  We grabbed lunch at Doubleday Diner first, then entered the Hall of Fame.

The Hall was great.  For my Dad it was reliving so many years of history.  For me and David it was reliving some of ours as well, but a lot of learning about the history as well.  It was a great experience and I can’t wait to bring my own family here someday.  The beauty of the town itself is worth it.

We sort of separated at the Hall for quite some time.  After I had had enough for one visit I went walking through the town and encountered some great scenes and a good break from the crowds (the whole trip we’ve been surrounded by each other and thousands of fans at each game, and in each city); this was a great little break.

I’ve very much enjoyed the trip, I enjoyed the one day break from games (though the town hosts “Doubleday Field” and I did catch a few innings of a couple youth and young adult games yesterday). Looking forward seeing Boston and Fenway Park.  Certainly the stadium we all have looked forward to the most!  Can’t wait!

Hope you’re enjoying the trip vicariously through us!

Free Wi-fi

On the road to Cooperstown!  The rest stop areas on the east coast are far different than ours out west.  They are all equipped with restaurants (fast food) and coffee shops.  They are also equipped with wi-fi!  So, I thought I would take advantage of it with by putting in a quick post.

I have listened to all of one and part of another Mark Driscoll sermon.  The first is called “Kingdom: God Reigns” and can be found on the page here!

The second is an older one (which I’m not done with yet, but it is 1 Cor. 12:12 –One Body).  Great stuff.

So, if you’re looking for something to listen to, have at them!

Also, I have posted again at idahomission08.wordpress.com; so please pray for my friend Jared.
