Top Five Tuesday: Fast Food Mexican Meal

It is 11:42 PM on Monday as I sit down to write my Tuesday top 5.  I am hungry, so naturally, todays top 5 will deal with food and specifically the food I am craving right now!  Over the years I have become quite the fan of some Mexican foods… I like me some spice!  So for the top five today, we’re going with the fast, cheap variety of the mexi-meal.

The criteria:  Because there is a large variety in this category, I narrowed it by simply saying that if you order and they assemble and hand to you w/o delivering it to your table, then it is fast food.  This makes the likes of Baja Fresh and the like, eligible in this top 5.  In addition, though I have had better burritos, nachos or tacos at individual places in the past, I am setting the criteria that it has to be a “chain” and I have to have had it more than three times to qualify.

Without further ado, the list.

Five: Chipotle. Of the Burrito places, this one doesn’t take top honors, but is consistently good and they really do have great Chips and Guac!

Four: Taco Time. I know, it surprised me too.  Okay, I must first clarify, not just any Taco Time will do.  First, it has to be a Seattle area Taco Time and quite frankly, the Fairwood Taco Time is the reason for the number four ranking.  I love the Tacos, Mexi-Fries and the Chips and Salsa (mild salsa).  Lately, I have gone with the large chicken taco salad made with non-fat sour cream and Jack cheese!  Great stuff.

Three: Baja Fresh. I can get into the Burritos, but they have a fresh Chicken Ensalada (salad) that I think is very, very good (and healthy).  Throw some fresh salsas on as a dressing and you’ve got a filling, tasty and very healthy meal!

Two: Sharky’s Woodfired Mexican Grill. Discovered these in SoCal, but now we have one at Southcenter.  The salads are great, but I really love grabbing the Nachos with some extra Jalepenos and cilantro!

One: Qdoba. The problem at Qdoba, there are too many things that I like.  If I am going healthy, the naked taco salad, sans the dressing is the way to go.  I add “fajita” stuff to it as well.  However, the burritos are simply HUGE and very good… but, more often than not I am craving the Chicken Quesadilla.  Add a little red and green hot sauce to it and my taste-buds are barking high praise!

So, you think I am wrong?  Tell me how and then prove it by taking me out to your favorite place!

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: 2010 Scouting

The 2010 YMV Scouting season began today.  Alan Andersen, from Mars Hill Church (West Seattle) and I headed over to Selah, WA (north of Yakima) to meet with a Pastor and check out the town.  A great connection!  As I return home and begin the countdown to Tuesday being Wednesday, I thought I’d better jump onto the ol’ Macbook Pro and get going with my Top 5!

Today’s criteria… the locations I am most looking forward to scouting this spring (from this point forward, otherwise Alan may get upset for not being in my top 5)!  Every year as we prepare for the Youthmark Mission Ventures the Youth Pastors/Leaders of the sending teams let me know the area they would like to go to (general terms such as “Western Montana).  So, here are my top five areas for this year (note:  I look forward to every area, but some of these places are new so they move up the ladder).

Without further ado, the list:

Five: Alaska.  Seems like this could easily be a #1.  However, scouting the places is one thing… getting to them is another!  Not only is it pretty-darn-costly to get there, it’s pretty-darn-costly to get around as well.  The first time I did a scout to AK it was with my good friend JR.  JR owned his own plane, he flew me around in his Cessna 172 (I even got to fly it).  This time, JR will not be around and we’ll have to take the Alaska Marine Hwy.  Which could mean 8-10 hour ferry rides.  Lot’s of work gets done on 8-10 boat rides, so there is a blessing in that!

Four: Colorado. The mountains are simply gorgeous.  Enough said.  Oh, and I have lots of friends in CO!

Three: Coastal Oregon. I think we’ll have two or three teams heading to Oregon this year.  I have led teams to Oregon a few times and one of my all-time favorite places was Rockaway Beach.  I believe we’ll have a team there this summer and I look forward to catching up with some old friends in Mike and Molly.

Two: Montana. Though I have scouted Montana twice before, this year I am taking Kirk Petersen with me.  This will be his first official scout as a Youthmark-guy!  We’re looking for four or five different locations, and one highlight for me is that I’ll go further east on I-90 than I’ve ever gone as I approach the future home of my sister-in-law (she’s getting married to a true Montana Man… picture, the Marlboro Man, minus the cigs, the mustache and the leather-face).  Should be a fun trip… Kirk, are you ready?

One: Arizona. Though I did live in Phoenix, I didn’t do mission trips to Arizona (we went to Spokane, California and Colorado).  This trip is one that I am really looking forward to because it is more than just checking out the mission locations for four different teams, in addition I will be able to see some old friends, see some great scenery in the AZ Mountains (around Flagstaff) and take in an M’s Spring Training game!  Oh, and I will be traveling with a good friend, Buzz Huget!  Oh… and I can get In-N-Out!

So, if you have restaurant, hotel or any other cool places I just need to go to in those areas, please let me know.

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: Margin Fillers

I am consistently examining my schedule these days.  I get so tired of hearing, “I’m so busy.”  I get so tired of saying, “I’m so busy.”  The reality, most of us are busy, but it is a choice.  I have no problem being busy, in fact, being busy is often life-giving.  However, I want to keep the first thing first in my life.  I prioritize my time with the Lord, my time with my family and my time to get my job done.  However, all three of those top priorities are not always put into a nice little box with black & white boundaries.

Today’s Top 5 examines the things I am prioritizing outside the top three… Whether or not I like these things doesn’t matter, the criteria being, these are the things I am doing outside of my top three priorities. These are the things I fill in my margins with.

Without further ado, the list.

Five: TV. Down time in the evening is nice and doubles often as “at home date” time with Elisabeth.  24, Idol, Survivor and Amazing Race are our Margin-Filling TV shows of choice.

Four: Blog. Yep, this very thing is a margin-filler.  As you can see, I’ve been a little less consistent with it, which means less margin in this season of my life.

Three: Young Life. Every Monday I have the honor of coming alongside teens in a ministry setting where the Gospel is proclaimed.  Many of these teens (most) do not know Jesus.

Two: Networking Projects.  This borders on “work.” However, I am a networker and I enjoy relationships and I enjoy helping others.  I have a few people in my life who are extremely generous with their finances.  I love watching how they steward well and bless others.  I may not be in the position with my finances to do that, however I desire to be wise with my time, talent and treasures.  Right now, I have been able to be generous with some talents.  It is a joy to come alongside other Youth Leaders and help them discover areas of ministry or speak into specific areas of their ministry.  Facebook, email, texting and coffee chats seem to be the practical margin-filler in this category.

One: Biking. I don’t always enjoy the exercise side of my life, however, I know I need it and ultimately I don’t feel good without it.  My goal is to get three or four solid (30 minutes or more) rides in per week.  Interesting enough, if I am just biking and not changing my eating habits I still put on weight… What happened to the metabolism of my youth?

Time to get back to the real priorities in my life, margin-time closed.  What are your margin fillers?

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: The Last 36 Hours

We just returned from a quick vacation to Leavenworth with a couple other families!  What a fantastic time we had with the Champers and Bauers! Though this top 5 will be a quick one, and full of pictures, it wasn’t all fun and games!  My “bottom one” is the lack of sleep.  Will just did not want to let us sleep last night, thus the quick post tonight, to allow for the needed rest to catch up!

The criteria, the top 5 things we did while on our mini-vacation to Leavenworth, complete with some great pics!

Without further ado, the list.

Five: Ice Cream and Fun in Leavenworth!

Four: Fun in the car! Good talks, laughter, great scenery and the kids watching a movie or two… oh and naps.

Three: Late night talk with the three couples! How nice it was to have fun and deep discussion around the wood stove.

Two: Playing in the Snow as a Family!

One: Sledding!

Thank you Jesus for a great family to share great times with!

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: Superbowl Commercials

It’s been a very busy day, but I will be faithful to the ol’ blog and get out my top 5.  Very simple one tonight; the top five ads from Sunday’s Superbowl.  The criteria:  What made me laugh.

Without further ado… the list.

Five: Green Police

Four: Doritos Gym

Three: Letterman, Oprah and Leno.

Two: Doritos “Don’t mess with my momma and don’t eat my Doritos”

One: Betty White getting tackled.

These are off the top of my head and I’m sure I am missing one or two, but for now… this will do!

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: Acquaintance Influences

This was a fun list for me to come up with because of the criteria I set for this one.  Today I will explore the five people who I would consider an acquaintance (meaning, I have at least met) who do (or have) influence(d) me.  The influence may or may not be to follow them, in fact, it may be to do what they have not done, but for whatever reason these folk have played a role in who I am, they have inspired me or they have influenced me to make a specific decision based on what I know of them.  It is somewhat random, in that, these are the current folk, I am sure this list will be different in six months.

Without further ado… the current list.

Honorable Mention: Mark Matlock (President of Wisdom Works, author, speaker) and Diane Brask (super-positive rural missions-gal who wants to see the rural parts of America reach the uttermost parts of the rest of the world… great vision).

Five: (TIE) Dan Allender and John MacArthur. Probably the only place you’ll see these two guys listed together!  I attended The Master’s College (where Mac serves as President) and finished my Master’s Degree at Mars Hill Graduate School (where Allender served as President). I have had several conversations with John MacArthur (even played hoops against him) and probably conversed with Dan Allender a handful of times (doubt he’d remember me). I love that these two opposites (in many ways) played a role in my overall education.  Both “systems” are distinct and I would never classify myself as a “Master’s Guy” or a “Mars Hill Guy.”  I would hope that I am simply an “Educated Guy.”  Dan Allender exudes grace and taught me more about listening to story (and the stories of others) than anyone (which is an incredible gift to have as a counselor/friend).  Dan’s books are excellent and serve the intended audience so well.  John MacArthur exudes Scriptural knowledge.  I truly appreciate the way he has been able to research and communicate insights into the Word of God.  Hardly a sermon-prep session goes by that I don’t use one of his commentaries to see what John had to say about this or that passage.

On the flip side of influence, I have learned well that some of the “followers” of men can be dangerous (doing what they think the chosen “man” might do, instead of making his or her own decision).  I like and respect both of these men, however Allenderites and MacArthurites tend to scare me. I am glad that both of these men are strong and courageous in their opinions (I don’t agree with every one of these opinions), but they are his own opinions, too often they become “the way” for their followers (no fault of their own).  Those who trust everything a man (or woman) says as Gospel truth ought to be warned… I follow Jesus.  I want to be a Jesus-ite.

Four: Mark Driscoll. I have met Mark one time, at a Tully’s Coffee… I thought, “that looks like Mark Driscoll,” so I introduced myself and low-and-behold, it was!  Here is a guy who loves Jesus and wants others to know Him well too! As the Teaching Pastor of Mars Hill Church here in Seattle, he is one of the most listened to Pastors around the world.  Though his tactics were criticized early on (he used to be known as the cussing Pastor) I can see the changes he has made and greatly respect the fact that he desires to grow the capital C “Church” in unity and influence.  He has taken his darts/bullets, and will continue to, but the man can flat-out teach the Word.  Though Mars Hill is still young, I believe they are growing in maturity and influence.  In addition, Mark is a good writer and his books have influenced me as well.

Three: Mark Oestreicher. Marko and I have met a couple times, with me knowing of him far more than him knowing of me.  For years Marko served as the President of Youth Specialties. Marko has maintained a blog for the last few years that I have been faithful to read (and he is the influence for one of my blog contests as well). Though I know our theology and methodologies in Youth Ministry probably differ a ton, I am thankful for his thoughts.  I disagree with some of what I have read from him (he tends to be more “emergent” while others would consider me “mainstream” or “evangelical”) but this doesn’t negate his influence…his blogging has had a profound influence on me, Marko is extremely transparent with his post, I have thought, “wow, this guy shares a lot about his own life, family, personal thoughts about YS, etc.”… I think that through this, I have learned to be carefully guarded with how much goes out to the public and whatnot.

The thing I will ALWAYS respect Marko for, while serving as President of THE BIGGEST Youth Ministry resource company in the world, Marko maintained a volunteer role as a small group leader for Jr. High boys at his local church.  If you’re going to write about, teach about and lead a ministry about youth, you ought to be involved with youth! Way to go Marko!  Marko is now in a time of transition, and is launching a coaching program, please join my in praying for his new endeavors!

Two: Greg Stier. I have had several conversations/interactions with Greg and we have exchanged several emails.  Though we are Facebook friends and have several common friends in real life, I can’t really say he and I are friends (yet). Greg runs an organization named, Dare 2 Share. I truly appreciate the ministry of D2S and, while a Youth Pastor, I loaded up the bus and took my students to their events.  However, the influence has come more through his blog and a few of the outlandish ideas he has had (which I believe he must have tapped into my head and stolen a few!  ha).  Though he only writes one or two posts a week, I have appreciated his candor and the personal stories of boldness in sharing the Gospel with those he comes in contact with.  As an organization D2S has done a few videos I am very impressed with.  On the flip-side, as the economy has had a down-turn the business side of the ministry has suffered and I feel as an upstart ministry (Youthmark) I have been able to observe from the outside and that has influenced some of the decisions I have made!  Pray for them in this tough time!

One: Francis Chan. One of my good friends is a close friend to Francis.  I believe I have spoken to Francis a couple times and have exchanged an email or two (I asked him to speak at an event); however, I have been frequenting his church (via Podcast and Vodcast).  In addition, I have read (most, not quite all yet) of Crazy Love and have recently purchased Forgotten God. Francis is a very gifted speaker and probably connects with a gathering of people better than most communicators I have ever seen.  His influence/inspiration comes in a  very positive manner.  I appreciate his total honesty (he actually admits to his struggles with his relationship with God, family and friends). He desires and strives for integrity.  It is obvious he has studied the Word. And I walk away from listening/reading with a desire to be more like Jesus and also see some practical things I’d like to do to become a better speaker, communicator and writer.

I am thankful that I get to spend eternity with Jesus and these folk who have put their faith in Him as well.

Grace,

Brian

Top Five Tuesday: Summer Preview

It is hard to believe, but in about six months I will be nearly finished with our second season of YMV’s.  Our last “Complete” launch will be finished on July 24 and those Pacific Northwest teams will all be serving in their communities.  Much will happen between now and then, and Youthmark Mission Ventures are just one of things I am so excited about for this coming summer…

I thought I’d make that the focus of this Top 5 Post.  The criteria, I am naming the top five things appearing on my summer calendar as of today, January 26.  If it isn’t listed yet, it doesn’t make the list!

Without further ado, the list.

Five: Frosh Camp for YoungLife. I am part of the leadership team at Kentridge High School for Young Life.  Each Monday we gather to love on kids and share the Good News with teens who, for the most part, don’t know Jesus.  What an honor!  This summer I’ll be leading the guys to a camp up in Canada!  Five days with 14 and 15 y/o guys is going to be a hoot!  Depth of relationship and plenty of hours to know their young lives so that they can (hopefully) meet the One who knows them best!

Four: Colorado Camps/Anniversary. I have been invited to speak at two different High School camps this summer in Colorado.  It is always fun to be the guest speaker at retreats and camps.  Extra-special that I am going c0-teach with a good friend of mine, Mike, who played professional basketball for the Lakers (also overseas).  The second of these two camps happens to fall around the same time as my 14th Wedding Anniversary to Elisabeth!  It just-so-happens that we were married in Colorado Springs!  So, the plan is to have Elisabeth come for that second camp and either on the front-end or back-end we’ll celebrate our anniversary as well!  Woo-hoo!

Three: Youthmark Mission Ventures! This one had to be “clumped” into one major category.  Because we have several trips heading out in Alaska, PNW, Inner City settings, The Rockies, the Desert SW and the Gulf Coast, I cannot pick just one trip that I’m most excited about

Two: U2 with Elisabeth! I was so excited to secure some tickets to my all-time favorite band.  Rockin’ out at Qwest Field with my wife is going to be such a cool experience!  Hoping to hear Where the Streets Have No Name and would be so excited if they dropped in 40! It’s so nice of Bono, the Edge, Adam and Larry to drop by!

One: Hawaii! Last summer we had the privilege of going to Sunriver, Oregon with the entire Aaby-side of our family.  We had a full week of fun in Central Oregon.  Well, this summer, the three kids on Elisabeth’s side (and spouses) have decided to treat Mom and Dad to a week in Hawaii!  This is going to be a blast!   We revealed the plan at Christmas via iChat with all the kids/grandkids present online/video.  Time with cousins has our kids so excited!  Aloha!

Anything you looking forward to this summer?

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: Tuesday Annoyances

I’m typically optimistic, in fact, my Top 5’s have all been very positive up to this date.  However, today I make the shift to Negative Neil (apologies to anyone named Neil).  As I sit here and write this post I am experiencing my number 1 annoyance.

The criteria for today, the top five things that have lately gotten under my skin (lately, means today).

Without further ado, the list.

Five: Bathroom Keys at Starbucks. I feel like such an elementary student, I need to stand in line to get to the front to ask for a key to find out if I can go to the bathroom? Really?  I somewhat expect the Barista to say, “I don’t know, can you?” (okay, “may I?”) Anyway, do we really need to go gas-station style and have a key clipped to some big spoon (or at one store a giant ruler?) just to use the restroom?  C’mon Starbucks, you’re classier than that.

Four: The Post Office. Often not a nice place to be. However, the new flat-rate box thing is pretty cool and they helped facilitate getting the first of the 2010 YMV Leader Stuff out today, but the overall customer service… umm… I almost went Postal. Newman!

Three: Department of License not sending Tab-Renewal Notices. For whatever reason the DOL has not updated my mailing address in 5+ years, even though I have updated them!  I was pulled over for expired tabs… totally my fault, should have remembered, but c’mon, 99.9% of people get reminders to do this (we always do for Elisabeth’s car), but I never do for my car.  Oops, gotta take care of that.  Officer was very nice and showed me grace!

Two: Receiving False Instructions and Then Being Told I Was Wrong. To protect the innocent I will be vague.  We turned in some forms today, did everything that we were specifically supposed to do (because the said forms had marked the exact things we needed to fill out), upon turning them in this person checked the forms, took the money and told me to have a great day.  I left, and then was chased down in the parking lot and told I was supposed to also do such and such and pay more (by the very person who told us what to do and what to pay to begin with). Annoying.

One: Customer Service Phone Trees and Waiting. I started this post about ten minutes ago, having already been in the Bank of America Phone Cue for over ten minutes.  Okay, they finally answered… however, only AFTER I talked to a real person only to have her tell me “I’ll connect you now” and sent me to the beginning of the stinking message again!  I needed to enter account number again and all that good stuff!  AAAAHHHH… I want to talk to a real person!

Besides this post, what has annoyed you today?

I’ll be positive again next week… promise!

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: TV Networks

A late start on my Tuesday blogging means a very simple post today.

The top 5 today will focus on my favorite network to watch on TV. I don’t watch a ton of TV, however, if I could only have five networks, here’s what I’d settle on and why.  There, that pretty much summarizes the criteria as well.

Without further ado, the list.

Five: TV Land. I honestly probably watch a few other networks a little more, however, this is the only place I can find some old-time shows I love, like M*A*S*H and the occasional Leave It To Beaver.

Four: The Travel Channel. Apparently I really enjoy watching gluttony… interesting also that “The Food Network” doesn’t have my favorite food show: Man vs. Food. I also enjoy a few other Food shows on this network: Tastiest Foods and Bizarre Foods.

Three: CBS. The “most watched network” is the third most popular in my book.  I am still an avid Survivor fan, and I also watch some NFL games on the big eye.  Late night Letterman provides the occasional laugh as well.

Two: ESPN. I’m in to Sportscenter.  Basesball.  Football. Basketball.  College Hoops and even the occasional Main Event Texas Hold ’em tourney.

As seen on FOX

One: FOX. The simple fact that this is where Football Games, Saturday National Baseball games and 24 are all on FOX puts it over the top.  We watch American Idol as well (okay, there, I said it, I can’t use “Elisabeth watches it” as an excuse, because I do watch it with actual interest).

Anyone agree?  How about your rants against my selections?

Okay, now we just have to wait 5 days until 24 returns!

Grace,
Brian

Top Five Tuesday: Things I Want For Free

A very intriguing title huh?

Last night Elisabeth and I were talking about a few of the practical things we want/need.  Sometimes we don’t have because we can’t afford. Other times we don’t have because we don’t ask (I think I’ve heard that one before…).  So, the criteria for todays “Top 5” isn’t really a list of the big things we want/need (like a new roof or new fence), but the little practical things that we want/hope for and may get for free just because of the great readers out there who want to help us!

I somewhat joke, but I somewhat don’t.  If you are gifted in an area that you could help us with one of these things, we’d be so excited (and thankful), and may even have you and your family over for dinner or something…

Without further ado, the list:

I don't know why Elisabeth wants it replaced?

I don't know why Elisabeth wants it replaced?

Five: The Fan. We have a light fixture/fan hanging above our kitchen table that Elisabeth has despised since we moved in. Well, a couple years ago she purchased a nice replacement.  It sits in our garage.  An electrician I am not.

Four: QuickBooks or Quicken Tutorial. A CFO I am not… oh wait, I guess I am.  I am often introduced as the “Founder and President of Youthmark.”  Typically a joke occurs afterwards, “Yes, I am the CEO, CFO, but I am also the Custodian.”  Okay, getting back to the matter at hand.  I own a company, but I am not great at “the books” side of things yet.  Anyone out there want to spend a couple hours giving me the quick tutorial on the ins and outs of some financial software?  We’ll bust out the old-school monopoly and play with some of that money!

Three: Video Fun. I am not a filmmaker (I know, this surprises you). I am fully aware that better marketing for Youthmark will require having videos (online and to be sent out) and I even have the ideas for a couple videos I want produced.  The problem, better marketing typically means more money.  My hope is that I might find someone who has talent, passion, time and the equipment (I have a great camera, but we need great sound technologies too) to help me produce a couple videos to begin the process.  It doesn’t hurt to ask right?

She's screaming!

Two: The SCREAMING, SCREECHING, WHINEY Avalon. A mechanic I am not.  However, I have learned that aut0-shops like to have you pay WAY more than you need to for a job that takes the twist of a screw-driver.  Elisabeth’s car apparently has a loose belt.  I’m a car-idiot.  Anyone know how to get a belt to not make the most obnoxious noise west of Dumb and Dummer stop? It really only makes it when the car is cold when you sit in a public parking lot where everyone around can see you clearly.

The shower-situation upstairs...

One: The Faucet. We’re certainly not a Bed-n-Breakfast, but we do have our fair-share of house guests.  A recent dilemma has arisen.  Our main-hall bathroom (where our kids and guests bathe) has a faulty (stripped) faucet.  When we turn the thing on we have no idea what temperature the water will be.  Turn to the left and it may get hotter… but it could turn to freezing cold.  Turn it to the right and your water pressure could go down to a trickle or you could feel like you’re being pounded by Snoqualmie Falls.  Not good.  I’m not a plumber, I don’t even play one on TV.  However, I don’t want to hire a plumber for a job that maybe, someone else could do for a meal on us?

So, there ya go, the top 5 practical things I want for free (at least I think they are practical).

We’re now taking applications!

Grace,
Brian
