Looking Forward… Discipleship

A week or two ago I started a new series on this blog (who am I kidding? everything I do right now on this blog is “new”).  I called it, “Looking Forward.”  This series will be a semi-regular post.  Today, I am using my Discipleship Relationships as the subject for this LF (and for fun I added some real and funny links).

In the next…

hour I look forward to finishing the menu/grocery list and some final details for my upcoming trip with my Lifeboat (small group of guys I discipled for the last 4 years at BPPC).

day I am looking forward to shooting the guys an email reminding them of the money they owe me, the last minute details, the money they owe me, the packing list, and the money they owe me (I have paid for everything upfront, so, yeah, reimbursements are needed… ha).

week I look forward to spending several days with these young men that mean a lot to me.  We are heading to Phoenix, AZ for a “last hoorah.”  Micah Egger and I have been co-leading this group for four years and for the last three we have talked, as a group, about doing something special at the end of their senior year.  The guys wanted guaranteed hot weather for a reasonable price.  So we’re renting a house, van and doing most of our meals at the house (to save money on going out).  Here is the itinerary for our trip:

Tuesday: Fly in, shop, pool time, “Lifeboat” time (we’re going to continue our study time, we finished Acts, but we’re going to do some review and concentrate on a few key things to launch into life).

Wednesday: AZ Diamondbacks game by day, pool time and Lifeboat

Thursday: EARLY wake up (5:00 AM), drive to the Grand Canyon (spend several hours there), then come down a back way to Sedona and Slide Rock.  Dinner out.

Friday: Relax day, pool, area mall, movies, some of our guys will have some friends visit (as will I, I used to pastor in Phoenix). Lifeboat at night.

Saturday: Some site-seeing and then the big thing on the agenda is a big “Last Supper” (Lifeboat) as a group.

Sunday: Church, lunch out and flight home.

Please pray the guys going:  Brian, Micah, Steve, Tim, Brandon, Alex, Ricky, Dylan, Frankie and John D. (and while you’re at it, pray for the few guys that couldn’t make it, we are sad: Nick, Josh, Jesse and John F.)

2008 Guys Lifeboat

2008 Guys Lifeboat

month I am looking forward to renewing my one-on-one discipleship with Ricky Judd and seeing our guys get involved in their ministries at their churches and at their schools.  Several of the guys are staying local and will be involved at BPPC and other local churches.  So I will get to stay in close contact with them.

year I am excited to see where God leads us (my family) in terms of a church.  I am most looking forward to getting involved with a small group of young men to disciple again.  My “C-Group” from First EPC and my “Lifeboat” at BPPC have been the highlights of my 16 year career as a Youth Pastor and I can’t wait to do a small group as a volunteer like all my wonderful lay staff members have done with me for years… these are the true heroes in youth ministry!

Father, I am so thankful for the years of youth ministry you have given me and specifically for the two small groups I have been privileged to lead, with the likes of Peter Beringer (FEPC) and Micah Egger (BPPC).  I pray you will continue to use me in shaping the lives of young men!

Back In The Saddle

Not this kind of saddle...

Not this kind of saddle...

I am sitting in my saddle at the Benson Starbucks (for those dying to know from yesterday).  I am beginning my sermon prep for preaching this Sunday at Boulevard Park.  This will be my first sermon since making Youthmark my full-time venture (though I did do a wedding on Saturday… that was certainly not a sermon).

I have the privilege of bringing a message from 1 John 3:11-21.  This is a fantastic passage, I’d really appreciate your prayers as I jump back into Pastor mode of preparing a message.  I did faithfully work ahead on some of my Youthmark items last week to make the time to do sermon prep this week.  However, one of my projects for Youthmark does require some extra attention.  Your prayers are greatly appreciated. Speaking of prayer…

Elisabeth and I have some big decisions to make in regard to our kitchen… we have been milking our old stove for all she is worth.  As of this morning we have use of one burner (the three other burners are not working, and the oven is now permanently locked because the door broke).  We need to replace the stove/range, and since we are making that change, do we go ahead and make the three or four other needed changes/updates to our kitchen?  Wisdom needed.  Thanks for your prayers.

Back to the saddle, resting in/on God’s Word!

Brian

Prayer Update

It’s been about a week since my trip to LA.  I came back from the trip very focused on what needed to get done in a three week period.  I quickly realized, three weeks was actually about two weeks because of my lifeboat (small group) trip in early August.  It has gone well, though distractions come up and I need that kick in the backside every now and then to remain focused (hoping your prayers will aid in that kick).

Since many of my readers have committed to be prayer partners for me/us/youthmark I think it would be good to post a prayer update from time to time.  I’ll try to do this often (perhaps once a week).  So here is the current prayer list:

  • Writing project is right on schedule, pray I continue to work diligently on this project.
  • Missions project is a little behind; pray for a good dedicated time of concentration so I can get ahead. This means setting aside about 3-4 hours to work only on this to feel I have a good grasp on progress.
  • Biking, I did really well the first few days, need to get back on the bike today to avoid it becoming a streak of days not riding.
  • We had a list of four churches in our area we had on our initial church-search list.  We have seen all four now, and over the next month we will re-visit a couple.  I am also privileged to be preaching at Boulevard Park next week (Aug. 3) and I will be out of town for one Sunday (visiting a PHX trip with my lifeboat guys).  Pray for the right fit for us, where we can be fed and feed.
  • Family life is going well.  Really enjoying consistently being home in the evening with the family!  Pray for our wisdom in parenting.
  • Several outside prayer requests others have let me know about, lift up these specific situations for my friends:  Two friends contemplating job changes.  A friend who has a loved one with cancer.  A friend who just transitioned to a new job.  Many friends leaving on a youth group trip this Sunday.  A wedding I am doing this weekend and the foundation of their new life together.
Thanks for your prayers for me, my family and our new ministry!

It’s Like Riding A Bike!

Today is the day!  Yep, going to do it… I think.

Discipline: Training expected to produce a specific character or pattern of behavior, especially training that produces moral or mental improvement (and in my case add “physical” and “spiritual” improvement).

As I posted before, the next three weeks are going to be quite busy.  I have a fun trip with my old small group (Lifeboat) coming up in early August (a last hoorah of sorts). In order to get everything done that needs to get done I decided the best thing for me to do would be to put together a “to do” list for each of the next 15 days or so.  Discipline produces discipline for me.  If I am discipline in my spiritual life, it usually means I am disciplined in the other areas of my life (and vice versa).  So to that end, about two-thirds of those 15 days listed includes a bike ride.  Because when I am disciplined in my physical life (eating habits and exercise) I am typically disciplined in the other areas as well.

I desire to be disciplined w/o being legalistic.  I desire to have structure w/o having too much of a check-list mentality.  I must show myself grace, but not abuse that grace!

It'll hurt, but the pain will be worth it!

It'll hurt, but the pain will be worth it!

So, today is the day.  I have already accomplished a few things on my “to do” list for today (but not the bike yet).  A lot of times my spiritual life is a lot like riding a bike too, sometimes I just need to get on the trail. Perhaps this can be an encouragement to you today!  Get back on your bike (physical, spiritual, emotional, etc.)

It’s time for me to get in shape… and may that shape be different than round!

Grace,

Brian

Thankful

I am so thankful to the people of BPPC and the surrounding ministries (merge, Youth Group, etc.) for the wonderful “going away” party/merge service they had for us last night. We are thankful we don’t need to leave these relationships and we know that many of you will be partnering with us through prayer.

I look forward to having a Youthmark Prayer Fellowship on Monday, August 18 at the Heiders.  I will keep you posted at this site (it will be in the evening).  We covet your prayers in the mean-time.

I will be heading down to LA for a quick day and a half of meetings to discuss publishing, marketing and the like.  Please pray for these meetings.  Pray for safety in travel as well.  I’ll post from down there.

For those of you connected to BPPC and the family gathered last night.  Thank you.  We were/are very blessed to have you as friends.

Grace,
Brian

Yo Adrian?

In the city of Brotherly Love… never did see Rocky, but did see the Liberty Bell (on the 4th even).  Pretty cool stuff.  My Dad took in more of the Historical District Museum stuff while David and I walked around other parts of the city… we were able to see the burial place of Ben Franklin; and found another sacred place, Starbucks (you can see David checking his email below).

After checking into the Holiday Inn Express we took off for the game at Citizen’s Bank Park, home of the Phillies.  Great park!  I had the best ballpark fare I have ever had, a LARGE turkey leg; the biggest mess I’ve ever made of my hands and face with all the BBQ sauce as well.  Good times.

The game was a great one, the Phillies win on a bottom of the 9th, two out single by a guy named (fittingly), Victorino!  The game was about 2 hours and 40 minutes.  We guess about 2:10 of it was played a in a steady rain… why doesn’t everybody go for the extra $100 Million and get  a roof?

The highlight of my day (yes, beyond the Bell, beyond the game, beyond the 4th) was getting two great text message pics of my kids.  Elisabeth sent a couple precious pictures to me during the game.  I miss them much, can’t wait to get back home but will enjoy the rest of the tour (especially when she keeps sending me those little pick-me-ups!).

Some of the pics from yesterday, below…

Last Day… sort of!

Today was my “official” last day as a pastor.  The problem, my office is not yet cleared out, need to head back tomorrow for a follow-up day!  Spent most of the day cleaning out the office, was privileged to grab a debrief coffee with my friend Miki (very encouraging time) and then headed to Halle and Audrey’s first swim lesson.

We treated the girls to a celebratory Mickey-D’s Ice Cream cone after their first lesson.  While there a woman was able to borrow my phone to call a church.  She is a woman leaving an abusive relationship seeking a new life with her two teen daughters.  Pray for her as she makes her way to a shelter.  We were able to help her with a night at a motel before she takes the bus to another city where she has a confirmed bed at a shelter.  My heart breaks for her.  My prayer is that she seeks the Lord.  I had a great opportunity to share with her for a few minutes (her daughters off to the side listening).  At the end of the conversation she asked, “are you a pastor?”  Technically, I am still (another 6 hours); but it was nice to have a conversation with a woman in this state without her having the “expectation” for me to be pastoral.

So, one more day of cleaning out the office and then a nice little decompress time; I will try to blog through that decompression as well!

16 Years, now this!

Why Youthmark…. What is Youthmark?

After my freshmen year of college in southern California, I came home for the summer and the current Youth Director at First EPC in Renton was looking for someone to man the ship when he and his regular volunteer staff were gone on multiple trips (camps, missions, etc.).  I had experience with being a volunteer in both church and Young Life, but had never been “in charge” of a group until now (I was only two years old in the Faith).

Upon arrival back at The Master’s College for my sophomore year I knew I needed to find a church where I could volunteer on a youth staff.  I even changed my major to Youth Ministry (later added a second major in Biblical Counseling).  I visited a few small churches and a couple large ones.  The one I liked the most was a small church, but the problem—they didn’t have a youth group.  After visiting a couple times I met with the Pastor… he asked me, “why not start a youth group?”  Well, 16 years later my career as a youth pastor is ending.  I have too many memories to list.  But, needless to say, these memories are laying the foundation and shaping the direction for Youthmark.

So, what is Youthmark?

In short, Youthmark is a company committed to excellence in Youth Ministry and Youth Ministry related fields (such as family based ministry, missions, etc.).  I have publishing endeavors, have created a missions program and will continue to host events that help youth and family ministries.  I will certainly post more in the days and weeks ahead.

I will also continue to come alongside other Youth Pastors.  For many years I have been networking with other people in youth ministry.  Specifically, I will host a couple different networks (Youth Pastors/Workers in any given area who get together for refuge, encouragement and partnering).  My current network (Burien/West Seattle) is such a blessing to me; I look forward to continuing our relationship!    I am a member of the National Network Of Youth Ministries (http://youthworkers.org).  I have been asked to define the “area” for which I desire to be responsible for.  So, not sure what will come of this, but I really enjoy being a part of networking, and it will only be beneficial for the work of Youthmark.

So, what is next? What does your schedule look like?

Over the next couple weeks I plan on taking a bit of a break.  They say the only way for you to get a sabbatical in youth ministry is to change jobs!  So, I will take about 10 days to decompress before I start really going at it.  Over the next six months we will be releasing the first eight books (Follow Me; A Journey with Jesus)—this is a small group or individual study series.  I will be reformatting the book, move: Mission Prep Workbook.  I had about 250 youth and youth leaders test market it this spring.  We (Elisabeth and I) will finish writing The 360ºParent  (a book which goes along with the seminar). I will also spend a lot of time developing our Mission Program.  I am VERY excited about this one!

I will maintain my “regular office hours” just like I did at my churches… which means, you’ll see me at the Coffee Shops!  I don’t do well with offices and I want to separate home life and “work” as much as possible.  Plus, I want to be out with other youth pastors and peddling my products!

You can certainly pray for these next 10 days. My prayer is that I really sense the “break” and my mind be refreshed and ready when I hit the full time gig!

Grace,
Brian

In The Beginning…

Greetings!

On Monday, June 30, 2008, I will  conclude my 16 year career as a Youth Pastor.

On Tuesday, July 1, 2008, Youthmark will become my full time career.  Wow!

Thanks for starting this journey with me through the blog.  We hope the blog will keep you informed as to what is happening in the Aaby house, Youthmark and perhaps even challenge your thinking from time-to-time. One of the most major reasons for the blog is to garner prayer support!

I am sure the blog will develop through time, my initial vow is to try to remain consistent.  I am sure it won’t be every day but I sure would like for there to be days with multiple entries and I am quite certain there will be multiple days without any post.

Thanks for coming by.  Hope you return.  Please pray for this transition in our lives.

Grace.
Brian
