Those Who Have Kids or Work With Youth

Next Saturday, October 10, 2009 I will be speaking at an event hosted by Family Academy.

EXPOSED is the name of the event is geared for parents, youth workers, teachers and even students who want to be educated on the technologies our teens are dealing with and the potential dangers, snares and positives these technologies may produce.

Take a look at their website and click on the flyer on the right to get all the information.  I’d be excited to see you at the event.  It’s an honor to be asked to speak!

Brian

CONTEST: What Am I Thinking?

Yep, it’s time for another WAIT!  Best caption for what these folks are thinking wins the prize.  Be sure to name the person (or character) is doing the thinking and then what they are thinking.

Winner Winner Chicken Dinner… okay, that’s what it will be, if you’re live and local you’ll be invited over for some grilled chicken, sounds good.

I’ll take the thoughts for the next day or so, update those that I think are in contention and post the winner below!  Enjoy this one, Elisabeth snapped it last week at Disneyland.  Just post under “comments” (click above) and if it doesn’t post right away, no worries, I just have to approve it first if you haven’t commented in some time (or ever).

Brian

What Am I Thinking?

What Am I Thinking?

****IN THE RUNNING****

rackyj21:

Eeyore: I guess that guy was right… an eeyore ride would be useless… *sigh*

Brad (even though he’s slamming me… and dead wrong I might add):

“Man, nothing’s going my way. I really wish Youthmark would take off, so I don’t have to have this 2nd job anymore.”

Alon (should have just kept it with Eeyore):

Eeyore is thinking: “I hate it when I fart in this suit with the head on!”

The Wifey:

“‘Happiest place on earth’ my ass.”

Micah:

Ouch, ouch, ouch, I knew I shouldn’t have volunteered for donkey games with kids, that pin hurts.

*** The Winner ***

Loved a lot of them; had to delete a couple of them, but “The Wifey” wins the prize with her risky, but very clever donkey/disney play on words.

Top 5 Tuesday: Current iPod Favorites

Thought I’d give you a different glimpse into my life today and make the top five a little more narrow and current. The top 5 things I am listening to these days on my iPod.

The criteria, it had to be on my iPod right now.

I have been biking and walking quite a bit lately, therefore, I have certainly listened to my iPod a lot more lately.  So, what am I currently choosing?

NW Bible Church, Dallas

NW Bible Church, Dallas

Five: Northwest Worship. This is an album that really reminds me of my summer.  When Youthmark was launching the Gulf Coast trips this last summer in Dallas I was given this CD from my friend at NW Bible Church of Dallas.  The CD features the songs that NW Bible does on Sunday mornings.  It’s an upbeat worship CD.  One of the things I really appreciate about it is it feels very authentic and non-show-y.  Seems like this is a group and a congregation that really enjoys lifting up His name.

images-2Four: U2, The Joshua Tree. This is quite possibly my all-time favorite album from any person or band. I have always been a U2 fan and this is just a classic album.  How can you argue with a first three set of “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “With our Without You.”  I would guess that I listen to this album at least once a week; not bad for an album that came out in 1987!

images-4Three: Hymns Ancient and Modern. This album, put out by the Passion tour folk (Crowder, Tomlin, Hall, Redman, etc.) is just plain good.  I love the modern spin they have put on old songs.  I was turned on to this album this last summer in Hawaii. It was the only album in the car I had borrowed.  Every day I had about an hour in the car driving to and fro the house I was using and the church we were serving.  30 minutes of worship songs each way really set the pace for the day and capped the evening of praise well.

Driscoll preachin'

Driscoll preachin'

Two: Mark Driscoll “Trials.” Long-story-short.  I have been biking a lot lately.  My ride around the Lake Youngs Reservoir is a 9.5 mile trail, plus a mile there and a mile back, totally 11.5 miles from my house.  Well, the 11.5 cycling circle takes me just about an hour; what’s really exciting is that a Driscoll sermon takes just about the same.  It’s been fun lately, because when I started biking the trail Driscoll was saying “amen” and I still had about a mile left on the ride, now I am finishing the ride before he is finishing his sermon.  It is NOT because he is preaching for longer, I’m getting faster!  Okay, back to the iTunes/iPod thing, in all seriousness, this series Mark preached last winter/spring has been excellent.  I’ve been challenged through the books of 1 and 2 Peter, I look forward to the ride so I can physically get the work out in, but the Spiritual workout has been equally as gratifying.

Funky Looking David Crowder

Funky Looking David Crowder

One: David Crowder, Church Music.  I just bought this off iTunes a few days ago, haven’t stopped listening to it since.  Not totally true, I have taken a few breaks, but pretty much every time I set up shop and plug in either on my laptop or on my iPod I have put Crowder on first.  I’m digging the funky tunes with great lyrics.

If you’re an iTunes person (or iPod, etc.) what are you currently listing to?  I’m certainly not asking “what is your favorite CD/music” my list may be a little different too, but what is currently in your dock or on the Pod that you would select if you could only choose a few?

Late September… Who Cares?

Sept. 26 and we're loving the outdoor dinner!

Sept. 26 and we're loving the outdoor dinner!

So it’s September, late September to be more accurate.  However, this did not stop us from having dinner outside on Saturday evening.  We took advantage of the low 70’s, okay, upper 60’s by the time we dined, but mmmm it was good and it was nice.

The meal came near the end of a great four-day stretch of me being a stay-at-home Dad.  Elisabeth and Audrey took off for SoCal on Wednesday to enjoy a little time together at Disneyland (we have a tradition in our family for our kids to have a trip to Disneyland with Mommy when they are five).  I am sure Elisabeth will be posting her pics/thoughts, etc. on her blog (you can link to her blog from mine).

Will enjoyed the playground during Halle's Soccer Practice

For me, Halle and Will, we filled our time with school (and the multiple drop off, pick-ups, etc.), soccer (practice and game), a long walk on the Soos Creek Trail, good meals at home, video iChat (with said missing family members), and a few episodes of Tom and Jerry (Halle loves the old classics).

He enjoyed some "Pirate's Booty" during her game.

On top of all that, Will took a few naps, most of them in his crib, but one he took elsewhere.

Great times, but thankful to have Elisabeth and Audrey back!

A Call To Christians…

Pretty exciting stuff happening in the lives of believers here, at least this is what I am sensing.  I’m so hopeful that we will continue to see believers step up in their pursuit of sharing Christ with those who do not know Jesus as Lord.  For too long we have thought that missions means “over there.”  The way I read Acts 1:8 is that “mission” means “everywhere” (our immediate area, those that are different within our area, just outside our immediate area and then all across the land–that’s my interpretation of “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria and the ends of the earth).

Greg Stier (President of Dare 2 Share) and I just exchanged a couple emails along these lines and I am happy to see he commented on my last post.  I did the same on his blog (gregstier.org) under a post by Greg.  Go check it out and comment on his blog here.

If you don’t feel a heart for the unsaved,  if you don’t sense a calling to your neighborhood/coffee shop/school/workplace, if you’re not moved to share your faith with those who don’t know Jesus, then I will say something quite bold–You may not know Jesus. Please don’t just blow over those words, read them, contemplate them, take them before the Lord and consider.

I’m proud to read some the emails and FB messages a number of you have given me along the lines of your “relaunch” into your mission field (campus, club and community). Keep it up for His glory!  Prayer, care and share!

The more you pray for the lost, the more you care for them and the more you want to share with them.  Start with prayer.  Witness what Jesus did with His message and how He got it out (by word & deed, not just deed).  Look at the Apostles, see how Peter was the first to step out in faith after Jesus ascended in Acts 1. In Acts 2, 3, 4, etc. we see the Disciples begin to actively share (in word and deed, not just deed) Here we are 2000 years later–it’s time for every Believer to “step up” and pray, care and share.

Amen?

Amen!

More Questions

Yep, that’s right, going right at the core of Christianity with this one.  Or at least what I think is at the core.

IYHO (for those out of the texting generation: In Your Humble Opinion), why aren’t Christians more active in sharing their faith with words?

Very open ended question, one that might cause offense, defense or neutrality.  One that in answering may cause you to reflect and face your own strengths, weakness or hypocrisy.  But I’m throwing it out there for discussion.  Statistics say that the average American Christian will not ever share (with words) his/her faith in an effort to have that person know and receive the Love of Christ. Why do you think this is the case?

I will eventually get around to answering these questions I am posting, but for now, I’m going to pose a few more.

Don’t hesitate to go back to my previous post and think through any of the answers you may have for those questions as well.  I appreciate the couple answers I have gotten already (I had a couple people email me rather than posting their thoughts under “comments”).

Appreciate anyone willing to risk in answering these questions.  Once again, don’t use names in negative examples (unless you’re talking about yourself and want to share a personal life-lesson). Thanks!

Share Your Youth Ministry Thoughts

I have had a number of conversations lately in regard to the way Youth Ministry IS and/or IS NOT working.  There are many advocates for house church, small group driven church, large programmatic churches, etc.  These philosophies and strategies possibly then dictate the way a church can provide for the youth of a church as well.

The most common church model, and the one I deal with the most with churches we relate with through Youthmark have a model that looks a little like this (this is simplified of course):

Sunday Morning:  Traditional Sunday School.  Announcements, worship and talk (in many ways, church of students).

Mid-Week: A Youth Group with games, announcements, worship and talk (Bible message/topical or study), often followed by small groups.  (Some churches do a third “program” event by providing small groups on another night of the week).

Outreach Events: Once a month or so churches host some sort of event for the churched kids to bring their unsaved friends.

Youth Pastor: Many churches have a paid Youth Pastor.  Most Youth Pastors/Directors I deal with have a volunteer team that he/she is directing.  Most Youth Pastors struggle with getting enough on their team to help “disciple” the teens (I use quotes because sometimes the YP is simply looking for help, leaders to be there, not necessarily to disciple.).

I have my own thoughts and opinions, and because this is my blog, I will share them… eventually.  But for now I am soliciting your feedback.

  • What is wrong or right about the way the traditional/most common church is attempting to do Youth Ministry?
  • If you were “in charge” what would you change?  What would you affirm about this model?
  • What were some of the most effective things about the youth ministries you have been a part of or heard of?
  • What should the purpose of Youth Ministry be?
  • Any other thoughts are helpful as well.

Some of this stuff could be sensitive materials, please be careful when using names (please don’t use any in negative examples).

This information is helpful to me as I come alongside other YP’s who are really thinking through the things that they do in ministry.  I count it a privilege that I get to network with so many and we love sharing stories, examples and opinions!

One Is Silver & The Other Gold

Do you remember the old song?  “Make new friends but keep the old, one is silver and the other’s gold”  The question, which one is which?

The last two weeks have been “silver and gold” weeks for me.  One in which I was able to hang with some great friends from my past while at the same time I have been able to meet some great folk who will most likely play a role in my future (as friends and ministry partners).

A few of the relational highlights:

Some of my new & old "national" Youth Ministry friends

Some of my new & old "national" Youth Ministry friends

Reunions: Over the last couple weeks I have been able to get back together with many friends in the northwest, many of whom are in networks of youth pastors I meet with.  Like today, I was able to grab lunch with Nathan and Eric (guys who both served with me as an Apprentice, when I was youth pastoring); or yesterday, having coffee with Aaron, after two different network meetings with people like Jeremy, Serena, Nick and Brian.  And just two days ago, I had lunch with Wescott.

Mike, speaking at Lake Retreat

Mike, speaking at Lake Retreat

In addition to the networking reunions, over the last couple weeks I have been blessed by reunions with friends from outside of the immediate area.  Two weeks ago I got to spend the greater part of two days with Jeramy outside of San Diego.  Any opportunity to spend time with a best friend is awesome.  Then last week in Georgia I was able to grab time with friends like Bo Boshers and my mentor Barry St. Clair (and then later Roger Palmer, who is a friend who works with Barry).  And then this last weekend I spoke for friend Nate Lindseth while also enjoying time with friend (and former Laker I might add), Mike Penberthy at Lake Retreat with another friend who works at the camp, Eric Sivertson.

New: As I said, one is silver and the other’s gold, but which is which?  I think the Lord has brought me into contact with some new “gold” (or at minimum, silver) over these last few weeks as well.  How God will use these people to shape me as  man of God and our ministry, is yet to be seen, but I get excited about new friendships with the likes of T. Ray, Brian, Bubba, Mike, Alon and a few more!  Whew, good stuff.

surrounded by Gold

surrounded by Gold

Now it’s nice to be home with my biggest gems, my family, and worship together our most treasured friend, Jesus.

I count it a privilege to lift up my friends (and family) in prayer.  It is nice to know we are supported by many friends lifting us up in prayer as well.  I look forward to reunions with you who are my friends and I look forward to the many new friends God will provide in the future!

Top 5 Tuesday: Things I Never Thought I’d Do/Be

In case you’re new to the blog, I have a series of posts on Tuesdays entitled, “Top 5.”  Each Tuesday I come up win a new and random top five list.  Because this has come up a few times in conversation this last week, I thought I’d examine and explore the top five things I have done in life that I NEVER thought I would have done or become.

The criteria.  As a teen, if you would have come to me (or even my friends) and said, “Brian, you will ____________ later in life!” the blank represents the five things that I would have thought you were crazy to have told me.

I think you’ll get the gist as we get going with the list.

So, without further ado, the list:

imagesFive: Fallen in Love with Coffee. That’s right, I said it.  I do love Coffee.  However, I am not going to lie to you, you may think that I am addicted, it may look like I am addicted (based on how long I am at coffee shops), but I can tell you, I’m not.  I just love the taste and the atmosphere that surrounds the local coffee shop.  Not only this, but it has become my favorite personal mission field!  Before I was about 20 years old I HATED coffee, so telling me that I’d even like coffee would have been a joke.  Now it is a joke to tell me that I won’t be at a coffee shop today (because I will!).

images-1Four: Go To India on a Two-Week Mission. I never really had a passion to go overseas, before being a Christian, and even after I was called.  But, in the year 2000 I was able to lead a group of 15 to an orphanage in Kota, India.  This trip has such an incredible impact on my life and future ministry.  In fact, in many ways it has led me to have even a bigger heart for the mission at home as I watched nationals reach their own far better than us Westerners could have ever done!  I praise the Lord for this unusual experience!

IMG_0577Three: Be a President of a Ministry. This one would have been pretty laughable.  Though I had been “Patrol Captain” in 6th grade, yep, that’s right, I was the cross-walk Guard President, I didn’t think that I would parlay that one into running a ministry organization.  However, God has given me a passion to train students and leaders for a life of mission (no matter where we are/go), and I believe this is what is at the heart of what Youthmark is doing and will do–therefore, I get to do this for a living now!  How cool is that?

"A man of the cloth" Not me.

"A man of the cloth" Not me.

Two: Be A Pastor.  When I started to write this list I thought this would have been the number one!  However, I did think of one that tops it.  16 years as a Youth Pastor/Associate Pastor  was certainly something I never thought I would have done.  Even now I look back upon those years and think, “I wasn’t really a Pastor was I?”  I never really felt “Pastor-ly” (and some may say I never acted that way too? Ha).  However, during those years I know that God shaped my heart to be a shepherd.  I don’t think I will ever step back into the Pastorate (I will never say never, but…), however, I know that the words Pastor and Elder are synonymous, and I strive to be elder-qualified and to be a shepherd wherever God has me!

YVM-Books-BlogAd1bOne: Write a Book (let alone multiple books).  See, I still can’t write the words “become a writer/author” because I simply don’t see it.  My wife is the author, she can wordsmith and craft a sentence with the best of ’em.  But, here we are in 2009 and I have a published book, weird.  Though I won’t admit it, I really do love getting my thoughts into written form.  I feel writing is a craft I can pick up, not a talent that I posses, but this excites me, because in especially this arena I believe the written word is a HUGE opportunity to get people to HIS written Word!  My hope and desire is to get teens, youth workers and adults into the Word of God so that they can see that is ALL about Jesus, the cross and His desire for the redemption of His children!  So, yes, I would have laughed if you would have told me that I’d write.  But I am certainly thankful that I have the opportunity!

Pretty fun journey we call life.  I am sure there are several other things I never thought I’d do or be, and many things God still has in store for me in the future!  Thank you Jesus!

What about you?  Anything on this list surprise you?  And how about your own life, anything you never thought you’d do that God has allowed you to be a part of or become?

Grace,
Brian

CONTEST: Brush With Fame

Elisabeth and I were up at Pike Place Market on Friday, I was able to sneak off a picture of another semi-famous person.  He was looking down at his iphone texting away so I took advantage and snapped a photo with my iphone!

Here’s how this works, you get to guess who the person is in this photo, if nobody gets it right I will start adding clues.

If  you already know that I saw this person this weekend you are not eligible to guess!

IMG_0017

Guess away, clues below as needed (and updated every few hours).  Since I saw him at Starbucks, that’s what you get if you win.

Grace,
Brian

****************

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner (or Starbucks technically).  Sort of a fun “Brush With Fame” but also a tough one to do, because I knew I should have had some more stringent rules, like “if you went to school with this guy you can’t guess.”  But, I didn’t, so good job Kevin Hearne, you win.

This is Mike Penberthy, played with the Lakers for a couple seasons and then went to to be a start in some European leagues as well.  He was in town to speak at a Men’s Retreat (he and his wife stayed with us actually, so it wasn’t like I just ran into him at Pike Place, we took them to Pike Place).  Ha.

More on Mike and Wendy’s time here in a later post!
