What Is Your Mission…Trip?

Are most mission trips actual mission trips or are they service trips, road trips or simply tourism-plus trips?

Is it word-confusion? Maybe it’s just a matter of semantics?

Perhaps it’s a “po-tay-toe or po-tah-toe” deal?

Mission
is certainly not a faith-specific word, however, I do believe the original mission  Jesus called the first-century believers to was certainly a mission of faith-making!

Plain and simple: I believe that a mission trip should, primarily, be for the purpose of disciple-making.

Before I am dismissed as a Bible-thumping, evangelism-freak, please understand that I firmly believe that we must show the character qualities of Jesus as we share the words of Jesus (especially as they relate to eternal life). A mission trip should have the end-game or ultimate goal of more people trusting Jesus for salvation.

This does not mean that every trip will be evangelistic in nature, however, I do believe a bridge to the great commission should be able to be made, explained and trained! Unfortunately, I get the sense that very few mission trip participants are making the connection (to the eternal) or receiving training.

Youthmark distributed Pray21 books to all participants at the National Youth Workers Convention (NYWC) and did a giveaway of an iPad mini at the Verge booth. In the few  hours I spent at Verge I asked any/all who came by to register for the iPad a few missions oriented questions. Youth Leaders were very quick to give the answer to the “where do you go?” and “what they did” but only a couple were able to answer “how did you prepare the students?” I see this as a missed opportunity!

Service based Mission Trips are not my enemy, I’ve done them, enjoyed them and have seen great outcomes. But I believe they become truly missional when we make the tie to the evangelism/discipleship that will take place because of our service. For instance, we took a week to prepare a camp (physically) for a summer of hosting camps. We painted cabins, deep cleaned bathrooms, raked grass clippings and prayed over nearly every foot of the camp knowing that we were preparing the harvest field. In our prep and debrief of the daily duties we were able to motivate our group because of the hope of the eternal life-change that would take place on those grounds. Our service-sacrifice freed up others for the relational-investment they would make in the lives of students all summer. Even though we knew we were not likely going to have evangelism opportunities, we trained students in evangelism so they could relate to and pray for those who would have the opportunity at that camp. But our evangelism training leading into the trip had much more to do with Mission51- the 51 weeks of life outside the one-week trip! Our primary mission is not the trip, it’s our own campus, club, community and church!

Where is your mission… trip? Are you failing to connect the social justice acts you do with the eternal justification Jesus makes available for us?

Continue to do great things for Jesus, but make the connection to (and tell of) the great things He said as well! As recipients of His great grace, let’s look to share that message with all!

Grace,

Brian

P.S. In perusing the mission trips available at NYWC I was pleasantly surprised that a few were focused on more that just the trip and had a strong evangelism connection. I’d invite you to check out Verge and Youth Missions International as two of my favorites!

Tales From The Field: Student Stories

This next spring Youthmark will be hosting our fifth season of “Mission51 Retreats.” Though we had been known for our Mission Ventures, the area of our ministry that has always scored the highest points has been our Mission51 Retreats and our curriculum.

Like our curriculum, each Mission51 Retreat has had a different theme and creative teaching/worship elements. This year we are making our biggest leap and risking in a brand new way and I’D LIKE YOUR HELP!

Can you do one (or more) of the following?

  1.  Tell a story of a student you know who is faithful to sharing Christ in his/her Mission51 Field (the 51 weeks outside of the mission)
  2.  Have a student write (email) in his/her story of building relationship/sharing Christ at a peer level at home.
  3.  Shoot (vide) a 1-2 minute (highest rez possible) of a teen sharing his or her story of being able to build relationship and share Jesus.*

Of course, you, as a youth leader, may have some stories of your own, I am really interested in hearing your stories of peer-level sharing (not just opportunities you had with teens).

Please send emails, videos and/or video links to info@youthmark.com.

-OR- simply comment here on the blog “I have one” and I’ll contact you (by commenting I, internally, have access to your email and can contact you).

We want to use these stories and videos as part of our Mission51 Retreat!

I can’t wait to reveal the theme and sneak in a few hints as to what will take place this year… stay tuned!

Grace,

Brian

*If doing video we need video permissions given, anyone 18 or older can say “I ______ give permission for Youthmark to use this video for promotion and training purposes”.  If student is under 18, get a video of his/her parent giving permission.

MAJOR ANNOUNCEMENT: Pray21 The Re-Release!

This is very, very exciting!

Youthmark has moved into the Publishing Realm!

Over the last few years I’ve been honored to be published by Spire-Resources, well, as of tonight, Youthmark officially moved into the publishing market with the official release of Pray21.

Chair drop (freebie) at the NYWC

Youthmark has given away close to 2000 copies of this book TONIGHT at the Youth Specialties National Youth Workers Convention (NYWC).

As I stated earlier, this is very exciting because this title fits EXACTLY in line with my blogpost about Trusting Teens. I believe this book will do much much in our endeavor to see students lead the cause of Christ. But here’s the equation I want to introduce:

WITH > FOR

That is, WITH is greater than for.

Praying WITH Youth will change your church. Your community. Our culture.

Students are ready to lead the cause of Christ. But they need the prayers, they need the encouragement. They need the mentoring of adults. They need to be trusted to lead and the humility to be led by a trusted mentor! Prayer will fuel this movement! Student Led, Adult Mentored Ministry!

It starts by getting congregations to believe in teens enough to pray not just for, but WITH students!

Check it out at Pray21.com and get your youth group, school or club involved. Pray WITH Youth!

Brian

Speaking of Love…

A great moment of the day/week.

I’m speaking/participating in the Open Seattle event this weekend and just a couple hours ago experienced the very thing I wrote about for my post on the Dare 2 Share blog!

Me: Where should we go to lunch?

Friend: There’s a place just a mile away I loved back in the day!

Ten others joined in (all recruited because my friend spoke up about the place).

We talk about the things we love!

CHeck out my post at D2S here. Then talk about what you love. Talk boldly! Love loudly.

Grace,
Brian

You Telling The Whole Truth?

As a person who has trusted in Jesus, I believe that I have a wonderful opportunity… but it is an opportunity that I often forget or choose not to take advantage of! I have the opportunity to share the Truth, but I often just share the truth (small “t” vs. capital “T”).

The coffee shop is where I often get to choose Truth or truth

I recently wrote an article for the Dare 2 Share “Relational and Relentless Blog” that deals with the small T vs. capital T Truth. Check it out here and leave a comment, contribute to the conversation!

Not Just a Movie: The Breakfast Club

When we started Youthmark Mission Ventures several years ago I wanted to make sure we had something to help students transition into life-back-home. A book entitled, Merge, was created. This book was a parallel Guided Study through the book of James and a modern day fable telling the story about a teen who had just started at a new school. Merge has since become a series of post-mission/camp books: Merge-Joshua; Merge-Ephesians and Merge-The Life of David (1 & 2 Samuel).

I just recently started contributing to the Dare 2 Share Relational and Relentless blog; my first post is about two young men who started something vibrant on their high school campus after God sparked an idea in them that they found in the Merge books.

Check out that idea and the video of one of the young men at the full post here.

I’m excited about my partnership with Dare 2 Share, if you’re in Northwest, make sure you’re getting your group out to the conference in April! If you’re not in the NW, check out D2S here to see where their other conferences will be in 2013.

Preparing To Imprint

I just returned from a fantastic four day trip to Arizona, where I teamed with friend, Timothy Eldred, to train Scottsdale Christian Academy students and staff for more than a mission! In fact, it was the first of a couple beta-tests for the upcoming launch of a movement we are anticipating entitled,  Imprint the Planet.

Scottsdale Christian High School is once again contracting with Youthmark for their missions program and we’re thrilled to help them with their 13-15 mission ventures for 2013, but even more exciting to me is seeing students (and staff) fired up to make a difference not just there but here as well.

This week we were able to see students STEP out in faith, RISK in relationship and return to their campus, club, community and churches prepared to LEAD together! I can’t wait to take the next steps for ITP with a local church retreat in a few weeks!

I am praising God for the many who risked in huge ways by seeking help in areas of brokenness as they began to understand grace in a new or renewed way. I’m pumped about seeing several students take leaps of faith in just a short 3-day time period. In addition I am thankful for the adults/teachers who honestly want to see Student Led, Adult Mentored (SLAM) take place!

Please pray for SCA and my friend Kevin Meyers (Teacher/Spiritual Life Director at SCA) as students return for their 2012-2013 school year and for the many who will take serious the call to Imprint the Planet!

As Imprint the Planet goes through a few adjustments before it officially launches (soon), my prayer is that God would prepare this generation of students/young adults to be unleashed to use their gifts, skills, minds, relationships and voices to make an eternal Imprint on this planet– all for God’s glory!

Keep up with us at @imprintplanet (twitter) and here on Facebook to get the updates and news first!

Brian

Are You Chicken?

My kids were captivated by the way we swept the leftover scraps off our plates last week in Montana. Rather than placing them in the trash or in the garbage disposal the remnant was tossed into a plastic bag.

We went outside to the gated off chicken coop and each my little ones got to put their hands into the bag-o-slop and toss a handful of scraps to the ground. The chickens were… well… they were chicken! They would slowly walk toward the scraps in order to peck at some sweet morsels of goodness, but would quickly retreat with the sight of the least bit of human motion. Spooked and freaked out they’d only come back when we weren’t around.

There’s a reason we say the phrase “are you chicken?”

Yesterday, August 1, was a day that many were divided about the chicken. This post, has nothing to do with that controversy. My writing has everything to do with “not being chicken” when it comes to asking God some great big things!

Yesterday, August 1, was the start of an awareness campaign for something that I believe will be great for this country!

Between now and October 1,  I want to make as many as possible aware of this fabulous opportunity! One month of dedicated prayers for this country. I picture churches, schools, home school groups, clubs and youth groups joining this prayer surge!

There is no way we can ever get one million people praying for our country without your help! Be it a tweet, a blog post or a status update, you too can help us get the word out! God wants to hear our voices united in prayer!

This is not about politics, it’s about prayer.

It is not partisanship, it’s about participation!

Those who know me know that my heart beats for the message of Jesus to be proclaimed! Well, I know that proclamation is only one part of the equation, prayer plays a major part! I pray we see hearts change, cities change and scores of people come to know Jesus! I believe 31 days of dedicated prayer will open the doors for even more proclamation!

31 Days of prayer for this nation may just change your very neighborhood!

Why not join in? Are you chicken?

Grace,

Brian

How The 4th Of July Fireworks & Evangelism Are Similar

10. Both are ultimately about celebrating freedom.

9. They both are about light shining in darkness!

8. Nobody likes them done “in your face.”

7. For many it’s just a once a year occasion.

6. They are both a little dangerous and adrenaline inducing!

5. Some believe they both should be illegal.

4. They make us look skyward.

3. Some people don’t like them done on their property because the clean-up process afterwards can take too long.

2. They are both better done with friends!

1. Many people prefer to watch “professionals” do it.

I hope you have a great 4th of July celebration. Enjoy time with family and friends and look for opportunities to share life and build relationships with those who do not know Jesus! And not just for this one day of this one week. There are 51 other weeks of the year that we get to do life with our neighbors, coworkers and family members! It really is Mission51!

May our lives display the love of Jesus and may our mouths sound forth the grace of Jesus!

Grace,

Brian

P.S.: Got any other similarities you want to share?

Has Anyone Modeled Evangelism To You?

I get really excited about the Spring! Though we are five months away from our retreat season, we are busy putting together the framework for our 2012 tour.  The Mission51 Retreats give us the opportunity to train all who attend our Spring Retreat in the area of life-evangelism. We truly believe that mission is not a trip. Though trips are great, I believe that the other 51 weeks of life beyond the mission is where the real work of mission takes place (for both the sending team and the receiving communities).

In the spring of 2010 our theme was “Live and Love Loudly” for our Mission51 retreat. We focused on the first letter from Paul to the church at Thessalonica. It’s a great letter and it gave me some fun ideas. One of those ideas I will give you as a “freebie” to use in your youth group, small group or just for personal thought!

The video below was used to help set that stage for evangelism training. When we hear the word “evangelism” or “share your faith” we see many begin to squirm. Quite simply, people are afraid to share because they fear failure and rejection. But the reality is, their fear and failure stems more from a lack of model than anything else.

Who has modeled witness to you? Who have you learned from when it comes to evangelism?

For those who haven’t had it modeled to them, I invite you to find a mentor. For those who are active, I invite you to teach others.

With a very small budget, a decent camera and some very low-paid (read: “no-paid”) actors and some okay editing equipment we put together this little piece we call “read, daddy.”

Grace,

Brian
