Are you on Facebook?

If you’re a facebooker (one who does facebook), I have just added a Youthmark page to Facebook and think you should become a “Fan.”  I mentioned on my latest “tweet” (what you call a post on Twitter) that now that I have accounts on twitter and Facebook and have a Youthmark page, I can now have “friends” (fb) “followers” (twitter) and “fans” (fb).  I think we should get one of these sites to create a new category, “enemies,” that would make things VERY interesting!

So, come be a fan of Youthmark on facebook, just sign in and then search “youthmark” and you’ll find us!

Dreaming With Halle

Stay away "Bob"

Stay away "Bob"

We have developed quite a few different games and activities for bed time.  One of these little games we like to play involves me acting like I am asleep and Halle waking me and telling me about her life.  Each time she “puts me to sleep” and “wakes me up” it is about 5 years in the future.  So Sunday night the dialogue went a little like this:

Age 22:  “Daddy, I’m 22, you’ve been sleeping for 15 years.  I am in love with Bob and we’re going to get married.”

Me: “No way, Bob hasn’t spoken to me yet, he was supposed to talk to me before he even asked you out on a date, let alone get married… what does Bob do for a job?  Where are you going to live?”

Halle: “Bob’s parents are Rich, we’ll live with them (then she taps my nose, which “puts me to sleep”).”

Age 30: “Daddy, it’s 8 years later, Bob and I are married, I’m pregnant too, with a girl, we’ll name her either Grace or Julia”

Me: “Wow, I missed your wedding!  Where are you living? What does Bob do?”

Halle: “Bob’s parents are rich, we live with them.”

Me: “How did Bob’s parents get so rich?”

Halle (THIS IS WHERE I LOVE THE MIND OF A 7 YEAR OLD): “Bob tells me that his Dad has a lot of jobs, he preaches at his church on Sunday, then on Monday he helps out at Target, on Tuesday he has his own cherry stand and sells cherries, Wednesday is his day off, Thursday he preaches at night to a small group at the church, Friday he plays the guitar at the school and Saturday is his other day off.”

The story went on (until she was 35), but I was amazed that Bob’s Dad could get rich doing what he did.  I think I must have been working at the wrong churches and certainly shouldn’t have done Youthmark, cherries would have been the better option!

Last, the very idea of Bob makes me weary.

Special Guest Star

About three weeks ago today (Sunday), I was thinking (finally, Brian was thinking), and for whatever reason, I was thinking about the Love of God and his relentless pursuit of us!  I am sure some of these thoughts were coming to mind because of Crazy Love, the book I wrote about a few weeks ago.  So anyway, back to God’s love and my thoughts…

For the first 8-10 weeks of the 2009 calendar year I had been speaking for Kentridge Young Life.  But for the previous 5-6 it had been Rob, the main guy over the entire area.  I normally wouldn’t do this, but I texted Rob on Monday and asked him if he needed a week off and let him know that I had a talk ready to go if he was open!  He was game…

So, strike up the band, we had a guest star appear at KR Young Life!  Welcome William Aaby!

The gist of the talk was how God loves us enough to give us freedom of choice (aka “free will”), while at the same time He relentlessly pursues us.  Will became a living illustration.  A few minutes into my talk I sat him down, he desired to crawl and choose his own direction (he’s getting into this whole independence thing).  The floor of the gymnasium was very slick, and he kept slipping and got very confused as to why he wasn’t making progress.  Amidst the “oohs and aahs” of the high school students, he began to well-up and though many a teen age girl would have loved to have helped, he wanted only his Daddy’s help.

Hmmm, sounds a lot like us?… May we be quick to walk the path the Father has set out for us.  May we be mindful of His pursuit of us and make choices (free will) that are consistent with what He’d desire.  And last, may we rest in His arms of grace knowing He loves us not because of what we do, but simply because we are His!

Burien Networking and a Rant

Before I get into this possible rant/sermon, please understand I understand the word “balance” and know that it is needed in our Christian life; where I may come across as “evangelistic,” I understand fellowship, discipleship and “meeting together” are needed, especially because of evangelism!

Every Wednesday morning I network with a bunch of Youth Pastors from the greater Burien-Tukwila-SeaTac area.  Because the last church I Youth Pastored is in that area this was my “home network” for the last five years.  These guys have become near and dear to me and I very much miss the fellowship and encouragement any time I have to miss it.

Last week we had a great discussion about “the fear of the Lord.”  As a result we all agreed that no matter the viewpoint on the fear we are/are not to have (as believers), we know that unbelievers should greatly fear not having a relationship with Him.  The conversation turned to what “witness” currently looks like in our own lives.  The challenge was given:  come back next week with a story of your own opportunity to share the Gospel.

Yesterday was the day to report.  We all shared the opportunities we saw the Lord provide.  I think every one of us was very honest, including a couple who shared they “were around Christians all week.”  This (being with Christians all the time) is a tough one for us Christians, and I would argue specifically hard for a paid pastor.

Pastors are paid to shepherd the flock (be with other believers).  There is a sense of accountability that most feel for ‘being in the office.”  Many pastors are so time-consumed with the sheep in their flock that they don’t have an active witness with the lost.  They may preach evangelism but live it very little.  I constantly struggled (and struggle) with this.

Brief trip down memory lane

I remember an early pastorate I held, our secretary told me about a conversation she had with one of our elders.  He called and asked why he didn’t see my truck at the church.  She conveyed to him that I had not been in the office yet.  She took the message for me to call him back.  When I called him he quickly put me on the defense and let me know that it was his observation that I needed to spend more time in the office where people can see that I am working.

I don’t remember it perfectly, but I think this is a fair representation of what my day looked like:

6:15 AM Fellowship of Christian Athletes for the local high school (50% Christians and 50% non-Christians)

7:30 AM Back home for a nap

9:00 AM Network breakfast with area Youth Pastors (all Christians)

11:00 AM Study for message at local coffee shop (around non-Christians)

Noon Lunch at home

1:00 PM at office working on youth group stuff

2:30 PM Coaching Basketball at local high school (almost 100% non-Christians)

5:00 PM home with my wife (she’s a Christian!)

6:30 PM Youth Bible Study (mostly Christians)

9:00 PM debrief with the small group team (they were saved too!)

10:30 PM Home

I was only at the church for 1.5 hours that day, and this elder had a really hard time with my schedule because I was “often out Mountain Biking (with students from my youth group), coaching (soccer and basketball at the high school), or doing other stuff outside the office; the congregants need to see your car at the office more as the drive by, so they can know they are getting their moneys worth.”

As a 22-23 y/o Youth Pastor I didn’t have the words to say in response.  I was stunned.

Back to today

I believe Pastors, Youth Pastors, Church Leaders and every-day congregants (such as myself) need to start talking about our witness the same way we talk about our study, prayer life and times of fellowship.  For some that may look all the same–you have nothing to talk about because you’re not doing much of any of it.   For me, with my youth, I have always been quick to share what I am learning from His Word.  I would often talk about my struggles (and times of discipline) with my prayer life.  I love sharing about my times of fellowship– but what if we were to talk more openly about the opportunities we take (or ignore) to share the Lord with the lost?

What if these Burien Youth Pastors took the time each week to share a fun story of obedience in sharing with the lost?  Perhaps the students in these youth groups would start seeing it as “normal” to share Jesus and not just something you do on a mission trip!  What would happen if at the dinner table moms and dads took the time to share about the opportunity he or she had to share Jesus at Boeing with a co-worker?  Maybe their kids would want to emulate them?

What if our expectation for each other was not to be present and accounted for in the pew, office space or small group, but actively pursuing those who are dying without knowing Jesus?

What if I expected my pastor to be out with the community, out with the lost and not always around to meet the needs of my congregation?

I need the Wednesday time of fellowship with the guys in this network, but I hope I need it for the right reason.  I want to come back each week because I need the encouragement (or correction) after a tough week “in the field.”

Rant/Sermon complete.  Now time to process this and live it!

Yard Work Analogy

My Dad loves yardwork.

I don’t.

My parents keep a very “park like” yard all year round.

We don’t.

I wish we did, but that would require constant attention to our yard (stupid weeds!).  Instead of that constant attention, every now and then we do the all-day project on the yard to make it look good (but rarely great).  One of these days, I hope, I will start practicing the little disciplines that take 15-30 minutes a week in order to maintain the good/great looking yard.

You see, the yard analogy has transferred over to other areas in my life right now.  If I were to practice those little 15-30 minute disciplines per week in several other areas the following would probably take place:

  • I’d have a clean and maintained yard.
  • I’d have a clearly organized filing system for Youthmark.
  • I’d have a very functional and clean garage where everything had a place!
  • I’d be done with writing, edits, etc. in a very timely manner.
  • And several others…

Why did Adam and Eve take that fruit?  I blame them.  If it weren’t for that stupid fall I’d have it all together!  Right?

Okay, so maybe I just need to go back and read this post and start practicing these things!

Burgers: Top Five

Every now and then I like to create a little controversy with my blog… don’t know if this will be one of those times or not, but worth a shot.

A couple months ago, while in Colorado Springs, I was able to take in a new Burger joint with my good friend Steve Burford.  Steve and I go all the way back to college where we enjoyed many an In-N-Out Burger (Double Doubles, of course).  Well, Steve introduced me to a new place: Five Guys.  This is no a “new place,” I believe it has East Coast roots.  Well, it was fairly new to the Springs.  It was wonderful, instantly cracking my “top 5” of fast food burgers.

I am proud to announce that Five Guys has made their way west and have landed in The Landing, in Renton.  In its first week at The Landing, Elisabeth and I have been there twice.  Re-affirming its “top 5” status.

So, without further ado, here is my current ranking of best Fast Food Burgers (qualifies as “fast food” only if you order and pick up at counter, no waiters/waitresses, and reasonable price comparisons to other fast food places).  Counting down from #5 to #1

Book List

imagesI am currently reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan.  I have greatly been encouraged (and convicted) by it.  Francis is a very honest speaker/writer and I really appreciate the way he is living out his faith in his writing and pastoring.

Over the last few months I have asked the question of other youth pastors/leaders for the names of some of their favorite resources they are using in Youth Ministry.  This book was suggested more than once, therefore I picked it up and am reading it.  So the question I have for you, my faithful reading audience…

What book needs to be on my list?

I am not a fast reader and I don’t read a ton, but I really do enjoy reading books others suggest for me.  So, what  do I need to read next and why?

Don’t only list a book, go and buy Francis’ book and read it!

What is Wrong with this Picture?

Does anyone else find it very odd (or maybe just a sign of the times) that there are lots of children around as the WA governor signs this bill?

I will choose to meditate on this Scripture today.

For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry. ~ 2 Timothy 4:3-5

We live in an interesting time, none of this really surprises me.  Tolerance is being preached, but it seems we are to tolerate everything as long is it isn’t narrow-minded Biblical instruction.

I have witnessed the mindset of students each year become more and more open to the ideas society would want them to believe.  I trust that as Christians we can continue to live in and be about grace, but keep our head in all situations as well!

Interesting photo opportunity for Governor G.

Praying for our nation.
